Helpful Honda guys help my favorite local charity

How cool is this.  A charity that helps people here in the SGV and is near and dear to my heart got a big help from the Helpful Honday Guys.  The publicity for the brand aside, its nice to see Torrance based Honda and its local dealers step up and help the entire community they do business in.  This is what a good corporate citizen does.  Thanks Honda.

Foothill Unity Center is always in need of some help…you can visit them here for ways to help them out.

12 Days of Giving : Foothill Unity Center

wrapped GiftThis is the first of several posts by us outlining charities and non-profit  causes near to our heart.  Its not always about monetary donations for these groups.  Tight on funds?  They welcome your time and talents to help them as a volunteer as well.  When its all said and done you feel closer and connected to your community when you help it out.  And isn’t giving of yourself all that matters this time of year regardless if its Christmas, Hanukkah or Pagan rituals?

One of the charities that I help when I can is the Foothill Unity Center.  This group is headquartered here in Monrovia with a satellite office in Pasadena.  Year round they service the hungry, newly homeless, newly jobless or whatever other suddent tragedy that hits their home leaving them in need of help.  They need volunteers for several upcoming events, money to support their programs, food donations, clothing…whatever you can help them with. Visit their web site linked in here for more information on what you can do to help them.  After the jump you can learn more of their immediate needs. Food Drives highlight the season

fork in it
Thanksgiving this year is a bigger challenge than ever according to my friends at the Foothill Unity Center. They feed literally hundreds of families every month, but this Holiday will be their toughest for a variety of reasons. Last year they fed 1,000 families. I won’t dwell on the “why’s” but will give you some ways to help.

First up is the “Put The Fork in Hunger” food drive in Pasadena to benefit the food banks at the Foothill Unity Center.  This food drive is going on NOW and all the details are in the link to their FB Page.  In short bring your non-perishable food items to 200 Bellafontaine Plaza and they will get it to the Foothill Unity Center to include in their packages for needy families.

The Foothill Unity Center needs a ton of help, not just food, but toys for the Christmas party they will hold as well.  This takes thousands of volunteer hours to get ‘er done.  They hneed help sorting food, making family packages and distribution to the families itself.  Sign up to volunteer HERE.

For more info on how you can help the Foothill Unity Center visit their web or call them:MONROVIA: 626- 358-3486 | PASADENA: 626-358-3486

Of course there are worthy food drives all over the city…chime in on the comments with your favorite charity in need of help.

The 2010 Nice List: Joan Whitenack

First on my “nice list” has to be Joan Whitenack of the Foothill Unity Center. The center serves the poorest of the poor with many services here in the foothills of the San Gabriel Valley. It is no small feat, but director Joan Whitenack gets it done with the help of volunteers, grants, schools and other non-profits in the area. To quote Bill Beebe, president of the Monrovia Association of Fine Arts that awarded her their Renaissance Award, “She’s got a nice smile, but there’s no saying no to Joan.”

Not saying “no” to Joan has worked wonders. What started out as a small effort by a local Church in 1980 has grown to a large incorporated non-profit with two service centers through the efforts of Ms Whitenack. The service centers are located in Pasadena and Monrovia. There they serve families and individuals in crisis to give them immediate aid then help them get on a path to recovery.   They even run a “pet food bank” to help them out with taking care of the pets as noted on a recent episode of the Ellen DeGeneres Show!

Aside from helping hundreds of families with their basic needs they have several special events through out the year. Among them are the
Back to School event where more than a thousand children receive hair cuts, dental exams, back-to-school supplies, clothing and even a keepsake art project.

Their mission statement says it all.

Foothill Unity Center, Inc. envisions a community where. . .

  • All have their basic needs met, including the need to give
  • All get the necessary support to become self-sufficient
  • All are treated with love and dignity … all the time

We provide critical support, in the form of food, clothing, motel vouchers, and referrals/advocacy to our neighbors in crisis. As the need for food brings people to us, we listen to their problems and help them find solutions. We work with other agencies to provide long-term shelter, counseling, medical, educational, employment and spiritual assistance depending on the person’s needs. In this way, Foothill Unity Center helps people return self-sufficiency. All services are provided with love and dignity, regardless of race, color, sex, age, religion, national origin, citizenship, sexual orientation, physical or emotional disabilities or veteran’s status.

All this happened through the energy and vision of Ms Whitenack to be able to help those in need in the foothill communities in the San Gabriel Valley.
