What is wrong with teenagers today?

I cite 3 stories… one local, 2 non.

(Ok, I know it’s not “teenagers” as a whole, but these 3 stories involving teens caught my attention today.)

Teens Allegedly Steal, Crash Land Plane

BIG BEAR LAKE, Calif. – Two 14-year-old boys escaped with minor injuries after crash-landing a small plane that authorities say they stole from an airport hangar. The single-engine Mooney M20C belonged to one of the boys’ parents, and the pair was trying to run away from their homes, said Cindy Beavers, spokeswoman for the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department. … The plane ditched in Joshua Tree National Park between 5:30 and 6 p.m. The boys suffered minor injuries and were treated at the scene by rangers, according to park officials. Officials said they didn’t know why the plane went down but speculated it ran out of gas. [full story]

In this photo provided by the Edgewater Police Department, a 3-week-old Pekingese puppy is shown Friday, Feb. 24, 2006, at the Wheat Ridge Animal Hospital in Edgewater, Colo. The puppy that two teenagers allegedly were using as a football died Saturday morning, Feb. 25, 2006, according to Jamie Petsitis, a spokeswoman at Wheat Ridge Animal Hospital. Police operations Cmdr. Mike Marchese said the teens could face a felony charge of animal abuse. (AP Photo/Edgewater Police Department, Mike Marchese)

…and finally a story about a 12 year-old… which is basically a teenager, right?

Boy, 12, Sticks Gum on $1.5M Painting

DETROIT – A 12-year-old visitor to the Detroit Institute of Arts stuck a wad of gum to a $1.5 million painting, leaving a stain the size of a quarter, officials say. The boy was part of a school group from Holly that visited the museum on Friday, officials say. They say he took a piece of Wrigley’s Extra Polar Ice gum out of his mouth and stuck it on Helen Frankenthaler’s “The Bay,” an abstract painting from 1963. The museum acquired the work in 1965 and says it is worth about $1.5 million. The gum stuck to the painting’s lower left corner and did not adhere to the fiber of the canvas, officials told the Detroit Free Press. But it left a chemical residue about the size of a quarter, said Becky Hart, assistant curator of contemporary art. [full story]

LA Rap News

A couple rap related articles caught my eye in the last couple of days and I’ve been meaning to post them here. First of all, Busta Rhymes is hiding out in LA after the shooting of one of his body guards, it seems he is trying to avoid being served with a subpoena. The next bit of news is that Master P was busted for felony illegal possession of a firearm. He is in LA filming ‘Dancing with the Stars’ and was pulled over for not having a license plate on his vehicle.

MySpace is blamed for disappearance of two teens.

Mothers Think Teens Were Lured Away By MySpace.com Suitors

POSTED: 9:41 am PST February 26, 2006

http://blogging.la/images/2006/02/alexandradimarco-thumb.jpgCALABASAS, Calif. — Sheriff’s detectives sought clues Sunday in the disappearance of two teenage girls whose mothers believe were lured away from home by men who contacted the girls via MySpace.com. Alexandra Nicole Dimarco, 13, and Alexis Anne Beyer, 15, were last seen Feb. 15 at a condominium complex at on Las Virgenes Road where both girls live, said Deputy Alba Yates of the Sheriff’s Headquarters Bureau. Detectives said they believe the two are together and may have run away, she said.

Alexis’ mother, Edie Beyer… and Alexandra’s mother, Kim Bridradfield, told the Daily News they believe the girls’ disappearance is linked to MySpace.com, where both girls had “blogs.” Bridradfield told the newspaper that men who Alexandra met via MySpace.com had called the family’s home before her daughter disappeared, prompting Bridradfield to forbid her from logging onto the site. “She had a blog and I kept her off of it,” Bridradfield told the Daily News. “I’ve had several phone calls from men. That’s why I took her off of it.” Neither girl has logged onto MySpace since their disappearances.

http://blogging.la/archives/images/2006/02/alexisbeyer-thumb.jpgThe mothers told the newspaper that their daughters did not take many belongings with them and even left behind prescription medication. Alexandra is white, about 5 feet 1 inch and 160 pounds, with black hair and brown eyes. Alexis is white, about 5 feet 8 inches and 160 pounds, with green eyes and brown hair.

Anyone with more information as to the the girls’ whereabouts was asked to call sheriff’s detectives at (818) 878-5538.

The worst part of this story is obviously that there are two girls who are missing and their mothers are worried beyond belief. But I can’t help but to think that this story is being spun by local media to focus on all the hoopla about all the reports of kids being the prey of sexual predators on MySpace. Regardless of the reasons of the girls’ disappearance, I hope that they return home safely and quickly.

An article in the LA Daily News mentions that Alexis left her mom a note that said, “Mommy,” said the note, scrawled in her daughter’s handwriting. “I love you very much. Goodbye forever.” The article from The LA Daily News seems to be the most thorough article on this story.

Sex Offended

fwd_logo.jpgAlright, even though I wish that this was hypercool Google Maps and Ajax enabled deal, it ain’t. But the information is there, and I guess that is all you need to know to protect your familia with the Family Watchdog. You enter your address, and then after an excrutiating minute or two, you get a map pinpointing all of the sexual offenders in your neighborhood, with details about their crime, as well as photograph. You can also get notifications of when a sexual predator moves near you.

The photograph part is sort of strange(especially when the subject has a mischievous smirk) and as I click on the map around my house I wonder if I will end up looking at someone who I see around the neighborhood. So far, I haven’t – but still. There are a crapload of sex offenders where I live.

Developing: Shooting at Muir Middle School

Very few details on this so far but NBC 4 is reporting that Muir Middle School is on lockdown after shots were fired. The school is at 5929 S. Vermont Ave and currently no civilians are being allowed on or off campus. Authorities are saying that no one on capus was shot, but aren’t saying anything about people in the surrounding neighborhood. More when we get it…

UPDATE: Brian Humphrey with the details, from the comments:

While it might not encompass all that may or may not have happened at Muir Middle School this morning (I’ll encourage you to contact school or police officials for their formal explanation), I am pleased to say there have been no, I repeat NO, reports of any persons injured by gunfire on that campus today.

I hope that will put peoples minds at ease. What did happen?

At 8:34 this morning, a 9-1-1 caller reported a shooting victim in the 6000 block of Vermont Avenue. Los Angeles Fire Department Paramedics arrived quickly to discover a 45 year-old male with non-life threatening injuries.

According to his statements, he was standing in front of a liquor store when he heard shots ring out. He subsequently sustained a single “through and through” gunshot wound to his left leg, just above the knee. There was minimal blood loss, and in fact, the man was ambulatory and in no apparent distress on the Fire Department’s arrival.

He was transported to an area hospital for treatment.
