First up a must stop and see is the Nissan exhibits in the West Hall of the L.A Convention center. Not only did they have the most outrageous press reveal in L.A Ever, they have a full size Tie fighter ala Star Wars to launch their limited edition Rouge One Star Wars Edition SUV on display. The Rogue One is limited to 5,000 copies in the U.S and includes a full sized signed and numbered Death Trooper Helmet. Details on how to get one can be had at the Nissan Answer Desk.
First up on the must see to believe is the Lincoln Navigator concept with full length gull wing doors and a valet closet in the rear. Doubtful either of those features will make it to the production version next year, BUT…it is really cool to look at.
Lexus brought its LC500 concept to life with a production model on the turn table. Nice to know Lexus can do sexy instead of just boring boxes.
Alfa Romeo brought its Stelvio SUV to the party. Very sexy box with an optional 505hp twin turbo V6 that will deliver 0-60 in less than 4 seconds. Not that either number will get much use on the gridlocked 405 or 210 ever. For commuters there is a more sensible 2.0l turbo 4.
Chevrolet cleaned house with awards this year. Wednesday Motor Trend named the Bolt 2017 Car of the Year, and Thursday they got the coveted 2017 Green Car of the Year Award for their brand spanking new Bolt electric car.
OF course there has to be some absurd at the show and this year is no different. Volvo brought a moose. A life size fiberglass moose to impress upon you their Swedish-ness even though owned by the Chinese now. (You will recall part of Sweden’s auto safety testing is the moose test, where a car swerves around a simulated moose and hopefully doesn’t flip in the process).
For me the single most absurd thing was a snow tracked Kia in their exhibit. No dancing mouses or super hero cars to show and awe this year. One silly SUV with snow tracks in the city that sees snow maybe once every 100 years.
The biggest show stopper custom wasn’t in the The Garage at Kenetia Hall this year, it was in the Galpin Motors hall between South and West Halls. IT was a pink dragster hearse. You have to see it to believe it.
