Blogging (in) LA: Daily Photo Blogs

There are many that call themselves daily, but only a few truly do it daily. Several are every few days, even a few are closer to monthly updates. Other than a glitch last week when when blogger was down a few days the regulars never missed a beat. Having tried this once and failed I have to admire the motivation and tenacity to post something daily, that in itself is no small feat.

My hands down favorite of the daily photos out there is the Pasadena Daily Photo. Why? Simply because since 2008 blogger Petrea Burchard hasn’t missed a day. Not only are her images well done, many cross the border into the fine art side of photography. Of course she has her share of cute puppies, news/documentary and slice of life stuff but her best work comes on Monday. Monday is “Zen Monday” when she posts an image that is left for discussion and interpretation by the viewer and they leave their thoughts in the comment section. Monday is my favorite day of the week thanks to Zen Monday.

Here is the run down of the other daily photo blogs in the LA Area that I follow with a short comment describing them.

  • Pasadena Daily Photo…she rocks what else can I add to what I already said?
  • The Sky is Big in Pasadena…nice guy documenting what he sees and does each day in Pasadena.  A few pics of his family and co-workers which don’t mean much to anyone who doesn’t know him. Never missed a day since he started in ’07.
  • Altadena Daily Photo…updates very infrequently but does nice quality work, especially enjoy the scanner stuff.
  • Gem City Images…an interesting daily documentary, with a few arty bits of my little corner of LA (aka Monrovia Daily Photo).
  • Covina Daily Photo…updates daily, always very well done arty photos, if not a bit overly ‘shopped.
  • Temple City Daily Photo…he puts up daily but I visit only weekly, not much interesting going on there often.
  • Palos Verdes Daily Photo…does it daily, and usually has some interesting images, some shopped, some just very well shot.
  • Daily Photo LA…doesn’t do it daily, and content isn’t just LA, but rather rambles about So Cal.  Decent documentary images for the most part, nothing really spectacular.

I probably missed a couple so feel free to shout out your favorite daily photo blog in the city in the comments.  Certainly I can stand to add a few more interesting blogs to my list of daily reading.

This post is one of many in the Blogging (in)LA series we are running the next few weeks.

  1. Frazgo, you’ve made my day/week/month/etc. Thanks.

If people are interested in checking out City Daily Photo blogs around the world, there’s one for just about every town. As you say, some are more active than others. Eric, from Paris, started this particular group and has been at it (yes, daily) for more than 5 years. The community’s supportive. But you could say daily blogging is not for the normal.

  2. Thanks Frazgo, I really appreciate it. Petrea at Pasadena Daily Photo and Laurie at Glimpses of South Pasadena really stand out. Not only for the photography but they are also such great writers. You get a double dose of enjoyment with them.

  3. Yep, I (who has been to Pasadena maybe five times inf five years) go to Pasadena Daily Photo several times a week (but Monday wouldn’t be Monday without Zen Monday).

I don’t know if its something in the water but there are several blogs in the Pasadena area that are warm, observant and totally free of snark.

  4. Bravo for featuring our dear Petrea and her terrific blog. I had the pleasure of meeting her in person last spring, as well as other area bloggers, when I flew to LA from B’ham AL! Daily blogging is hard work and addictive! When Blogger went down last week, we all ran to Facebook for our “fix”!

  5. What K says–about the lack of snark–is exemplified in Virginia’s comment. She’s a member of the City Daily Photo blogging community from Birmingham, AL. We became friends online and she came to visit the LA area because she’d made so many friends here. The Pasadena blogging community parties together, hangs out together and basically gets along. I don’t know if that’s unusual or not but it’s great.

K, he’s an L.A. guy. If you haven’t looked at his photos, you’ve got to. Same is true of Virginia’s. These two are top photographers.

  6. Petrea’s wonderful blog inspired me to start my own blog when I moved to South Pas 3 1/2 years ago. I’m lucky to be part of such a cool blogging community.

    1. Thanks Ben for the two new links…if I keep adding I’ll never leave the PC. Hope all is well with your darling daughter.

  7. Ben, that’s awfully nice of you but I respectfully disagree! I think blogging is such an individual expression that there can’t be a “best.” Each of these blogs is as individual as the blogger, each has its own following, each shares its own world view.

By the way, I’m liking this group blog concept here on Blogging (in) LA. Those of us in the Dena ought to think about this if we ever get tired of the daily routine.

  8. I nominate and totally support Here in Malibu…(via LAObserved)
yes, most of the photos are of the one area but each day a visit (via photo) reminds me that while I live inland, the ocean is there, the beach is there and that the Malibu area is worth preserving…
    Veronique de Turenne….

  9. Great photoblogs! I go out to Monrovia fairly frequently to see my Aunt. Looking forward to sharing these photoblogs with her.

I’ve been doing a photoblog for a little over a year now: Just my visual take on LA (and an excuse to explore :). Enjoy!
