Win Tix to See Reel Big Fish & The English Beat on Friday!

rbfenglishbeatSoCal natives Reel Big Fish bring their ska-heavy pop-punk to Club Nokia this Friday together with classics of the genre, The English Beat. While in my not-so-humble opinion most SoCal ska is a pale imitation of ska’s first & second iterations in Jamaica & England, Reel Big Fish have earned my respect with their years of dedication and their recent decision to drop off a major label & go independent. I’m not anti-major label, exactly–they fill a role, like getting U2’s albums out to Best Buy–but too often these days they just don’t serve the needs of the small, eclectic bands with niche fanbases. Going indie will serve RBF well.

Anyhoo, you wanna see the show? Tell me your favorite ska song in the comments, and why you like it (don’t forget that part & only give me a song name! that’s so annoying!)…we’ll randomly pick a few lucky winners to go check out the show. Show details are here.

  1. Twist & Crawl. Why my favorite? Because it reminds me of a dear family friend who introduced me to the Beat before they’d ever been heard of in my home town. Every time I hear that song, I just smile.

  2. This is a tough one for me, but I’m going to go with The Prince by Madness. It would have to be something by Madness, because they are my favorite band. I selected The Prince, because it’s not only a great song but also a great homage to Prince Buster. So, listening to this song inspired me to listen to a Prince Buster and many of the other artists who inspired Madness, The Beat, The Specials, The Selecter and other bands of that British ska revival movement of the late ’70s/early ’80s. Bring back The Prince.

  3. So many! Ackee 123 End of the party Sugar & Stress Spar wid me Rotating Head Playdough – Aquabats Here in my bedroom – Goldfinger Anything that ups the mood and makes me happy! Used to party with Reel Big Fish back in the day! EB & Wakeling – love them! They put on quite a Show! Love Club Nokia as well! Would love to take my childhood friend! Pweeze!

  4. Alright favorite ska song is get some more by slow gherkin because there’s no way to not dance to that song. Hook me up with tickets for the beat. I saw them last year with rxb and it was an amazing show. Mirror in the bathroom might be a favorite too. The place went crazy for that.

  7. TOASTERS WEEKEND IN LA/ WHY YOU ASK WELL HAVE YOU HEARD IT?? IT HAS AN AWESOME SOUND AND WHEN EVER I HEAR IT NOW IT TAKES ME BACK TO WHEN I WAS 17 WALKING TO MY CD STORE TO LOOK FOR NEW CDS OUT AND THEN CHILLING WITH MY FRIENDS

  8. kammission, your Untouchables reference reminded me of a little story. A few years ago, I was driving around town with an old friend, and Lebanon by The Untouchables shuffled into play on my iPod. What struck us both at the same time was that except for the rhyming and cadence, you could have replaced Lebanon with Baghdad and not missed a step over a 20 year span.

“Hey, I like music, too, man!”

And, yes, Fishbone is still red hot.

  9. katventure, great pick. I love me some Toasters. Haven’t seen them in quite a few years, last time was at The Knitting Factory. Come to think of it, that was the first time I saw Go Jimmy Go, too.

Some of the other bands that haven’t appeared in this thread yet:

    Operation Ivy
    Skankin’ Pickle
    Mephiskapheles
    Bim Skala Bim
