Win Tix to Mogwai at the Orpheum Saturday, May 16

mogwaiThe bombastic Scottish five-piece Mogwai returns to LA in a venue befitting its magestic, cinematic, explosive sound: Downtown’s glittering neo-Classical movie palace The Orpheum. I can’t tell you how excited I am about this show, and I also can’t tell you how essential it will be for you to bring earplugs if you win these tickets.

I started with Mogwai’s Come On Die Young album, was blown away by the loud-soft-loud-soft post-rock landscapes, and then backtracked to their 1997 album Young Team. That sealed the deal. The later Rock Action & Mr. Beast were fantastic as well. A show some years later at the El Rey left me flattened, gasping for air from the wall of sound, and blown the fuck away.

To win, tell me your favorite Mogwai song and why you love it so much. May the force be with you.

The Goldenvoice show info is here.

  1. “take me somewhere nice” is was and still is my absolutely favorite mogwai song, even though they rarely, if ever, have played it at the shows i’ve been at. it used to be the song that i’d listen to on repeat as i was going to bed because it was the only thing that could calm me down enough not to have nightmares. it’s still the prettiest song ever!

  2. my favorite song? 2 rights make 1 wrong

why? it’s beautiful and memorable. it tells my story in alaska. i’ve used this song for a photo slideshow when i went to alaska to run a marathon and whenever i listen to this song, i reminisce of that moment in time.

  3. @mpiedlourde: this is also a really good song. yes they don’t play it anymore, i think mostly because it was a song with vocals which they didn’t really do back then…more prominent in the latest album though.

  4. Summer, from the Ten Rapid singles collection. It was also on Young Team in different form.

Why? It’s quiet/loud dynamic is the blueprint for what makes a *great* Mogwai song. Also, it is perhaps one of the bands most “rocking” songs. I first heard it when I “borrowed” the disc from a friend amongst other discs and couldn’t make myself return with the rest.

  5. My favorite Mogwai song would happen to be Acid Food, off the Mr Beast album. Why? Because when I was traveling East on the 10 freeway, where there is a split on the 110, my car started smoking.

While this happened, I was listening to the the Mr Beast album in my car, and Acid Food was playing. It’s such a mellow song that it kept me calm throughout the whole ordeal. As it turned out, the cap housing my antifreeze was loose, and that what I initially believed was smoke was actually steam escaping from the antifreeze canister. Incidentally, the song after Acid Food is Travel is Dangerous (which probably would have been a more fitting song title for my ordeal).

  6. I second Summer off of Ten Rapid.
I couldn’t tell you why it’s my favorite, but it is the song that I tend to play people when trying to introduce them to Mogwai.
I have started many a mix CD with that song…

PS: Stupid Prick Gets Chased By The Police And Loses His Slut Girlfriend, besides being a fine song, should win some kind of song name award.
