BarCampLA 6: Today

BarCampLA 6 is this weekend.  Last minute notice, I know.  I had planned on posting this yesterday, but life & work got in the way.  So here’s some tidbits and hopefully, I can make it out there to meet you!

What is BarCampLA?

BarCamp is an ad-hoc un-conference born from the desire for people to share and learn in an open environment. It is an intense event with discussions, demos and interaction from attendees.

All attendees should be prepared to give a demo, run a session, or help with one. All presentations are scheduled the day they happen. Prepare in advance, but come early to get a slot on the wall.

Presenters are responsible for making sure that notes/slides/audio/video of their presentations are published on the web for the benefit of all and those who can’t be present.

Anyone with something to contribute or with the desire to learn is welcome and invited to join.

BarCampLA will be held in Santa Monica and begins at 11am.

  1. Sharing what?
    Learning what?
    “Sessions” on what?
    Demos of what?

This post, AND the Wiki it links to, tell me near to zero about this. Is this some kind of code for a pot smoking thing? Or sex club? Or is it a big joke?

Sorry, but I honestly don’t get what this is about.

  2. bbxx, that’s the beauty of it. The sessions are open and there are 4 tracks. The people attending had decided on what they want to present. The subject matter is absolutely random.

I’m in track 1 right now, titled Have You Got What it Takes? presented by Pertjan Van Stam. He’s a Dutchman visiting her from Zambia. Right now, he’s telling us about live in the Bush; tribal life, internet connectivity, etc. At 3pm, track 3 will be a presentation by Travis Sevo who will talk about his Favorite Expensive Beers.

Other subject matters include How to Pitch Like a a Pro, How Does the Stock Market Affect You? and Brain Pong. The sessions are 45 min. which includes presentation and Q&A.

This is my first BarCamp and I’m impressed just from talking to people. Yes, most of them are geared toward tech/Internet, but if that is your interest, then it’s worth a visit.
