Big Ol’ Jet Airliner Landing at LAX Tomorrow

UPDATE: Thanks to commenter Chennessey, The Emirates flight will land at 9:20am on one of the south runways and depart LAX at approximately 11:00am for a tour of the LA skies, land at 12:30 then sleep over, departing tomorrow at 8am for NY.a380-800-6604_tcm233-248222.jpg Tomorrow (August 5) Emirates Airlines will be landing it’s Airbus A380 on one of the two south runways at LAX.  I’ve heard conflicting landing times.  Someone at the airport offices told me 9am, the woman at the Emirates 800 # told me 1pm.  This makes planning a viewing trip rather tricky!  If anyone knows more precise info, please comment. In case you don’t see the plane tomorrow, don’t worry.Qantas will be making regular A380 flights from LAX to Sydney and Melbourne starting in October, so the bubbleheaded behemoth will soon be a regular feature in Los Angeles. Emirates will begin direct flights from LAX to Dubai in October as well, but using their new Boeing 777s.  (Flight time only 16.5 hours!)To see video of the Airbus that landed in Los Angeles in March 2007, fly through the break. This video was shot by our very own Will Campbell. She’s an awesome beast!

  1. Oh wow…I so want to see it as I missed the first one a year ago. Any link or chance of getting the time pegged down closer? I know from experience that 9AM is a pain in the butt from here, 1PM is much more doable.

    PS..welcome back, London metblogs loss.

  2. Hey Julia, thanks for the link to my A380 landing vid. Just an FYI. WordPress gobbles up the standard embed code for clips. The work-around that was developed is this:

Just drop that into the code of your post and it should be good to go!

  3. Was that Will’s voice on the video? I think he said it all: “Good God!” and, “…good God!” That thing is amazing.

As much fun as it is to watch it in the air, why do I get the feeling that if I were to buy one of those tickets to Sydney I would be in for 16-17 hours in the same cramped coach seat I’ve had on 747s?

Definitely fun to watch from the ground, though. If it turns out to be 1pm, I may have to head down there. Julia, will you update here, if you hear? Fraz, want to catch the carpool lane?

  4. Burns, yep that’s me in all my ohmygarsh fanboy glory marveling at the monster plane as it passed overhead. PS. Julia was there with me (and bonus points to Fraz who tried to make it down there but ended up stuck in traffic somewhere on the 405).

That first landing took place on the northern most runway and we were nearest the In ‘N Out at Sepulveda. If it’s scheduled to come in on one of the south runways this time, then I think the best place to watch this baby would be on Aviation between Century and Imperial Highway.

  5. Well, thanks to you guys for letting me know about it!
The plane actually landed around 10am. There was a holdup on the landing time because an American Airlines plane on the south runway had to be evacuated at the same time the plane was supposed to land.
The plane landing was super quiet, and I was standing right under it on Florence Blvd! I was really surprised at how quiet it was. My pictures are terrible, but I’m sure you can find other great pictures online elsewhere.
