Another Store Bites the Dust

lnt.jpgI noticed the Linens ‘n Things on Riverside & Woodman in Sherman Oaks is toast. Huge signs are advertising the store’s closing, with everything on sale. If you need some towels and stuff, get your shop on.

Normally, I don’t think much about store closings, since most businesses don’t make it anyway. But, this is a major retailer. Hunting around online, I found that the entire chain had been in trouble:

Hurt by the credit crunch and sagging housing market, home furnishings retailer Linens ‘n Things has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection.

Then comes the news that Starbucks plans to close 600 stores across the U.S. Eek. Can we call this a recession now?

Just curious, how are those mom & pop stores doing out there?

  1. I remember that store. We bought lots of crap there when we first got married. But how much of their decline is due to BB&Beyond knocking their faces in the dirty with better prices and selection too?

  2. I was in the Pasadena store about 6 months ago on an early Tuesday evening. I was the only customer in there (which was actually a bit creepy). I bought some stuff and the checker gave me 20% off even though I didn’t have the coupon.
