78th Blessing Of The Animals

With the last couple happening in April, this year’s annual Blessing of the Animals at Olvera Street — taking place this Saturday — stood a good chance of sneaking past me had not my wife Susan pointed out yesterday that Easter was this Sunday.

The event’s become an annual one for us — a rite of spring. Accompanied by our Russian tortoise Buster , she serves as house ambassador for our four cats and two dogs and fits in well among the wild menagerie of mammals, reptiles, birds, fish, and even the occasional insect that people bring to parade past Cardinal Roger Mahony who’s deft as ever with the holy water flinger-on’er. Whether you have a pet or not you should come check it out. Plus it’s a great excuse for margaritas afterwards.

commences at 2 p.m. Photo by me of Nicole and Paris (at least that’s what I call them) from 2007.

  1. I’m not religious, but have always been curious about this. Too bad I have to work this Saturday until 6. Love the photo!

  2. Jodi, I’m so not religious and even moreso not catholic that each year at the cardinal’s dousing I expect the holy water to burn on contact. But it only tickles.

  3. This is so my speed. I’m not religious either, although I make a point of attending the annual “Pet Shabbat” at my family’s temple. I get to bring my dog! For a blessing! Fun.
