Fundraiser for Slain LAPD SWAT officer

officer_simmons.jpgIn light of last week’s line-of-duty killing of LAPD SWAT Officer Randal Simmons, this bears mentioning:

The department has set up trust funds for the families of Simmons and fellow officer James Veenstra, who was seriously wounded in Thursday’s shootout in Winnetka.

Here are the details from the LAPD Blog:

Due to overwhelming support for LAPD Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) Team Officers Randal Simmons and James Veenstra, trust funds have been established in both their names through the Los Angeles Police Federal Credit Union (LAPFC).

For what it’s worth, the Burger King franchisees who raised $27,000 for the family of LAPD Officer Landon Dorris in 2006 will be donating tomorrow evening’s proceeds to the fund, according to a police press release:

On Wed., Feb. 13, 2008, the Burger King at 700 W. Cesar Chavez Ave. in Los Angeles will donate 100 percent of its sales from 6 a.m. to midnight to the Simmons family, courtesy of Ralph and Larry Cimmarusti, who own more than 50 Burger King Restaurants in Los Angeles and Texas.
