Just in from LAFD alerts

15940 W. Skytop Rd. Large water main broke on hillside. Threatening homes above and possibly below. Evac being assessed for several homes.1 home with large cracks, foundation cracking, moving, imminent danger of collapse. 1 home below evacuated.

LAFD also lists this as a Photo Op… but who’d want to get close to that?

UPDATE (2:00am): Zach at LAist visited the scene and reports he “could hear the hill creaking.” Creepy.

UPDATE (11:32pm): ABC 7 is reporting that four additional homes have been evacuated.

  1. David,

Thanks for sharing word of this sad event, which we are pleased to say has not caused injury.

We like to remind b/la readers that LAFD_ALERTs go out to hundreds of people across our city and nation, and that mention of a ‘photo opp’ is merely to draw the attention of the many news photographers (including news helicopters) that subscribe to this free system.

Most often, a ‘photo opp’ is a situation (like a large fallen tree) that is self-evident in a single image, like a photo with caption you see in the local paper.

Respectfully Yours in Safety and Service,

    Brian Humphrey
    Public Service Officer
    Los Angeles Fire Department

  2. This is going to be an interesting story to follow. After being involved in more than a few hillside claims over they years the geologists will be the ones to tell us what happened.

Right now it is reported as a “water line” as the source of water causing the slide. Experience tells me that many of these leaking waterlines were the result of the hillside creeping warping and splintering the pipes. The true source often comes down to someone over irrigating for years, doing grading without permit that changed how water went from the top of the hill to the bottom.

In the end people forget that the hills are geologically active and prone to sliding. Homeowners at the top don’t heed the warnings given on the disclosures when they buy the property. Homeowners at the bottom don’t realize the changes they make change drainage as well causing water to pool deep underground on the clay layers that bring about a sudden slip. All very interesting and unless you get into geology it won’t mean much. Simplest…what is up will slide down eventually.
