Berkeley Kicks Out the Marines

L.A. does some crazy things. We have mass protests of illegal immigrants who wave flags of their homeland and demand American rights. We dump patients on Skid Row. We destroy historical landmarks and fill the air with pollutants.

But, we are not as dumb as Berkeley. Our neighbors to the North have decided they don’t want the Marines in their city. They don’t want them recruiting there, so they’re telling them to get out.

From CNN:

Republican lawmakers in Washington fired back this week, threatening to take back more than $2 million of federal funding to the city as well as money designated for the University of California-Berkeley, the campus that became a haven of protests during the Vietnam War.

In related news, Berkeley has outlawed alcohol, sex, cooking with gas, and holidays.

  1. Love the last line. We also don’t have tree people trying to prevent some trees from being cut down in order to improve a sports stadium, while not caring that trees of the same type and age are being cut down elsewhere in other parts of the city.

  2. Seriously, that’s your angle?

I wish the Marines weren’t recruiting anywhere. If people want to sign up, they can. I’m not a fan of their aggressive and slightly invasive techniques for recruitment.

I grew up in Riverside, where we were required to take the ASVAB (Is that right? ASVAT? ASVAP? Something like that?) and give our information to the US armed forces. We were told that if we did not, we wouldn’t be able to graduate. (Huzzah for living in a conservative neighborhood!)

Those assholes showed up at my house. At social events I was at. Called me. Emailed me. They literally wouldn’t leave me alone for 3 years. 3 years! After I was already in college and after telling them every single time they tried to talk to me that I’d never sign up to fight in a war.

Maybe they’re not so aggressive these days (I doubt that). But isn’t the military, specifically the Marines, trying to recruit soldiers to send overseas to fight in a war we initiated based on a lie? Why should you support that?

I think it’s commendable that the city is taking a stand against recruitment. I don’t see anywhere in the article that they’re saying Marines themselves aren’t welcome; just those who are trying to recruit more into the Marines.

  3. Jason…aye aye aye this is going to be hornets nest. My 2 shiny copper bits on the topic. Let them open an office. Walk past if the people not interested walk by, its freedom of choice. After that butt the hell out and don’t get the bigger powers to try to hold funds hostage. BTW…with the democrats controlling the senate shouldn’t they be equally culpable for allowing to happen?

  4. All hail the People’s Republic of Berkeley for their continued fight against imperialism! The U.S. out of the East Bay NOW! I wonder what the largest student group on the UC campus–the Young Republicans–has to say about this?

  5. Ah, Berkeley. Their heart’s in the right place, I suppose. If you feel so strongly about something, by all means speak up. Hold a rally, wave your signs around. Whatever it takes.

Be interesting to watch, but I think it will ultimately be fruitless. A symbolic act at best. Kind of like their Nuclear Free Zone status. No nukes in city limits. Except for their campus reactor, of course.

  6. “alcohol, sex, cooking with gas, and holidays” Because getting recruited by the Marines is as fun as these things?

  7. 1. Marines open up recruiting office in Berkley.
    2. Anti-war Berkley residents protest against recruiting office.
    3. Berkley City Council takes unprecedented step of setting aside a parking spot infront of office for protesters AND makes a declaration of, “… is not welcome in the city, and if recruiters choose to stay, they do so as uninvited and unwelcome intruders.”
    4. Republican senators submit plan divert Federal funding from Berkley to Marines.
    5. Berkley City Council comes back w/ tail between their legs. (http://www.nbc11.com/news/15245031/detail.html)

The military is the pointy spear of our foreign policy. They’re the tool, not the person holding the tool. Blaming them for the war is the same as scolding a kitchen knife for cutting your finger.

  8. Jason, the topics you raise are so disparate that any chance you had for making a cohesive argument is lost in your bluster.

Your assertion that the Marines were kicked out is plainly inaccurate — the article states that the city council approved a resolution urging recruiters to leave. That’s not kicked out, that’s not banning something, that’s a community toothlessly speaking what they believe. It’s like me saying Jason Burns is an idiot not worthy of posting on the forum known as blogging.la and I urge him to abstain from posting except in the comments. What’s wrong with that? Were you similarly upset in 2003 when dozens of city councils passed resolutions against war?

  9. No nukes in city limits. Except for their campus reactor, of course.

LOL…..they’ll never live that one down.

Frankly, I think the most of the Bay Area has its head up its ass.

After 15 years of living in that environment of near-tyrannical political correctness, I couldn’t wait to get out of there.

Like Jason says…LA does have its issues, but the best thing I like about living here is that people don’t take everything so gawdamn seriously.

Most Angelinos have a live and let live attitude which, on the downside, can sometimes border on downright apathy.

I much prefer living amongst folks who tend to be cheerful optimists rather than depressed miscreants.

  10. As others have pointed out, Mr. Burns, you really need to learn to read.

But based on what Berkeley actually did, good for Berkeley.

  11. As others have pointed out, Mr. Burns, you really need to learn to read.

I would respond to that directly, but I’m not sure what point you’re making. Probably because I’m illiterate.

Anyway, here’s what some of you are apparently missing:

The Marines are not in Berkeley forcing innocent bystanders off the streets into uniform and on the next transport to Iraq. They are RECRUITING. Why are they recruiting? Well, because we have an all-volunteer military. Because of this, many of you that blindly cheer for a town that frowns upon the Marines have not been drafted. Because you have not been drafted, you do not have to serve. You and I get to stay home in our jammies and surf the web, commenting on silly little blogs.

But of course, towns like Berkeley will be the first to cry Mama when no one comes to protect them.

    Yeah, good for Berkeley.

  12. The reason they have to recruit is that chickenhawks (like you?) support wars but don’t sign up to fight them, or ask their sons and daughters to fight.

  13. Fair enough. I probably should have made clear that I was against invading Iraq to begin with. But, I didn’t think my political beliefs had much to do with the Berkeley story.

That’s the problem here. Berkeley is making a statement about the war. But, if it’s really about the war, then they’re addressing the wrong organization.

Think of it this way: If you are against recruitment by a volunteer military, then you a for a military draft.

Unless, of course, you are against the military altogether. Which means you are Switzerland.

  14. Jason, I know they are recruiting. Speaking for myself, the current U.S. military is offensive on multiple levels. To use an analogy, If I went to your community and setup a prominent recruitment station for my porn production company, you couldn’t kick me out. I would not be surprised if you asked me to leave or if you enabled the protesting of my legal establishment. It’s toothless words, a sentiment expressed and nothing more. It seems that you missed that — that the community has determined that they do not want this and have asked it to leave.

And since you brought it up: I’m all for mandatory conscription with peaceful service alternatives for conscientious objectors.

But seriously, your last comment, who in this modern world are you afraid of that the Marines are going to protect you?

  15. Now you’re comparing the United States Marine Corps to a porn production company?

That isn’t even the worst statement in your comment. This one wins it:

who in this modern world are you afraid of that the Marines are going to protect you?

I wonder how some of the men & women who serve feel about that statement.

  16. The reason they have to recruit is that chickenhawks (like you?) support wars but don’t sign up to fight them, or ask their sons and daughters to fight.

I am so sick and tired of this straw man argument.

Using this “logic”, every American who stayed behind during WWII would be now be considered a “chickenhawk”.

Please…find another argument cause this one has grown really stale.

To use an analogy, If I went to your community and setup a prominent recruitment station for my porn production company…

As a veteran, I find this “analogy” not only stupid but HIGHLY offensive.

What next for Berkeley?….obstructing police and the CHP from recruitment?

I mean afterall, they’re just “gangsters” and “trained killers”, right?

  17. Ugly American, I’m not saying the military does porn. Today’s military exists to destroy lots of foreign people and their stuff, like roads and power plants and sanitation facilities, so we can get our way. That’s offensive to me just as porn and my contempt for the military is probably offensive to you. But, all three of those things are legal. So is free speech, which Berkeley city council exercised. Jason misled the readers to gain sympathy for his opinion by improperly stating that the Marines were kicked out of Berkeley. No law against Jason doing that either. Yay.

I have asked others who defend the military (and previously in this thread): who are we preparing to defend ourselves from with this military several magnitudes larger than the nearest competitor? No one has ever given me a straight response. Maybe it’s because I’m too young to have known anything about the Red Scare and I grew up believing that there were no real national enemies, only countries who are not yet trading partners.

Anyway, I think y’all are missing the point. Berkeley’s city council took a stand on an issue. They’re allowed to. If you have a problem with the stance they took then move to Berkeley and run for city council.

Ugly American, If a community 500 miles away decides that they do not want any police who are you to stop them?

While I’m babbling… freedom is free. If someone tells you otherwise it’s because they have stolen your freedom and are trying to sell it back to you.

  18. Today’s military exists to destroy lots of foreign people and their stuff, like roads and power plants and sanitation facilities, so we can get our way.

    Ohreallynow?

…who are we preparing to defend ourselves from with this military several magnitudes larger than the nearest competitor? No one has ever given me a straight response.

I’m sorry, but I simply refuse to believe that anyone could be this incredibly naive.

Okay then…let’s play a game called “Downsizing the U.S. Military”.

First off, North Korea and Iran would begin raining down nukes upon us while Hugo Chavez sends in Russian-made helicopters and F-16’s across our southern borders.

That is, if China doesn’t get to us first.

Then…Syria, Russia and Cuba begin to get in on the fun…mmmmm…probably Pakistan too cause I personally don’t trust those bastards.

Better yet, just take look at the Carter, Reagan and Clinton administrations and you’ll begin to get a pretty good idea as to the end results of a weakened, downsized U.S. military.

As for the Berkeley City Council…no one is saying that they cannot voice their opinions…of course they can.

What I object to is their dismal failure to provide a safe, non-threatening environment in which these Marines can simply conduct their day to day business…not to mention all of the potential recruits who may be interested in signing up.

By giving special parking privileges to Code Pink and allowing them to act like “gangsters” by blocking the entrance and adjacent sidewalk, they’ve basically crossed the line of “free speech” and are wandering dangerously close to the area of sedition.

And as much as Berkeley is a free speech, no nukes, liberal utopia, I’m betting that most of its residents disagree with their council’s actions.

I mean seriously…what did they hope to gain out of this?

  19. Berkeley is all about alcohol & sex. I had a gas oven when I lived there. And it has its own holidays like the art car show and it does earth day like almost no where else.

It’s a free country, is it not? Isn’t that what the marines are ostensibly & allegedly fighting for? So if Berkeley says, hey move along to Albany, Emeryville, or Oakland, why the hell do you have to write a fucking retarded, incoherent, nonsensical blog about it? Your post makes so little sense it makes want to drink alcohol and have lots of sex while pancakes are cooking on a gas stove as soon as the next holiday rolls around.

How much crack did you smoke before trying to equate all those things with trying to get military recruiters out of the city?

Add, I suppose, Berkely next might try to ban fucking idiots like you, since you’re clearly not smart enough to have gotten into Berkeley.

  20. I’m a little tired of people who don’t just come out with what they want to come out with?

You tell people to learn to read, but your above post is completely cryptic and it would real easy to misinterpret what you’re saying and then you could go, “No, you’re stupid I was saying this…”

Well why don’t you just say that. I am not talking about just you Jason, but people in general online, are very unclear. I can’t even find dates and locations for calendar events.

What are you saying Jason? What’s your opinion here? You mix in “illegal” civil rights with and air pollution.

Are you trying to make us think? What, what’s your side, what’s your angle, because I’m not sure here at all. And I think you should just state your opinion if you’re going to put up a post like that.

    Browne

  21. “but we are not as dumb as Berkeley.” Anything…Pick anything…. Colleges, Public Radio, Population education level, Community, science.

Misguided, left-wing, unrealistic, sure I can see these. Dumb? I’ve never lived in a smarter city.
