Criminals at Crash Mansion

Is the real estate market making young hooligans trigger-happy? Is it safe to go back on the dance floor? Where are Kid ‘n Play when you need them?

The Grand Avenue Night Club in Downtown Los Angeles should have been long gone by now. In its place, two grand towers rising known as City House and The Olympic. But then, the Earth cooled, and people stopped buying condos.

Grand Avenue became Crash Mansion L.A., where people seem to take their dance space personally. Get up in someone else’s junk, and you can get stabbed or shot, which is what happened last night, according to the LAPD.

“The shooting appears related to a fight that started inside the nightclub on the dance floor,” said Lieutenant Paul Vernon, head of detectives for the Central Police Station. “After a young girl was stabbed in the arm, patrons began leaving in large numbers. That’s when a man with a gun started shooting at other men in the parking lot.”

Remember when the most dangerous thing about going out was beer goggles? Good times.

  1. The think we quickly forget in the modern age of instant news access, is that reported crime rates are actually lower than they used to be. When I was growing up in the 70s and 80s, it was (reported to be) a much more dangerous time. It’s just we were blissfully ignorant with no instant access to sensational news.

Only the totally fearless went downtown after dark in the late 80s. When I was in high school, a party wasn’t off the chain until shots were fired.

    Anyone remember the Casa?

  2. wait, the City House and Olympic buildings got scrapped??! how sad, of all the structures coming up downtown, i was looking forward to those the most :(

  3. From what I’ve read, City House and Olympic are on hold, indefinitely. But, Downtown is still hot despite the crappy market. With L.A. Live barely in its infancy and ground breaking on the Grand Avenue project, anything can happen in the next 5 years.

  4. I’m not sure what happened but I live near there, and have been to Crash Mansion quite a few times and have always got a good vibe there. I also go to and from friends lofts, Shell, and Ralphs at all hours of the night and have always felt totally comfortable. Wierd stuff, but I think it was a bit of a fluke.

  5. What a shame… I really think Crash Mansion is the coolest new club downtown. It’s so sad something like this had to happen at such a cool place. I hope it doesn’t affect too much… I also think this was a fluke. That area is coming up. I’ll still go there. There are some good shows coming up.
