Tattooed Gang Banger Denied Asylum

U.S. Courts have rejected an asylum plea by an L.A. gang member, who fears his tattoos will make him a target for rival gangs in his native El Salvador. He moved here when he was four, and is a legal immigrant.

On one hand, there’s something seriously wrong with a legal system that considers a kid who has been raised in the US since he was four years old to be any less a citizen than a child who was born here, but not necessarily as moronic as a guy who gets gang tattoos by his own free will then worries he might be targeted as a gang member.

Wouldn’t those same tattoos make him a target here in Los Angeles?

  1. So tatoos with gang markings are as much your identity and an identifier. He did them of free choice, now he wants asylum because of that choice?

The story link gives some more detail but enough behind the whole story. Repeated felony convictions are mentioned. Immigrants without citizenship can be deported for criminal convictions. If people don’t like that then they need to work to change the law.

We’ve seen over the years a few immigrants deported because of criminal records from “gang” or “mob” activity in NY and Chicago early in the last century. It’s been a tool of the justice department to help control criminals by removing them and sending them home.

Some articles to review as food for thought.

There’s a lot more to immigration reform than just our immediate borders and protecting the citizens. Does anyone want non-citizens with a criminal history to remain free here to continue?

I doubt anything meaningful will happen as its a campaign year. Maybe its watching all the IA caucus stuff that has left me a bit cynical this morning, but no one has stepped up with a passable reform plan that makes it easy for those wanting to be citizens to do so and keep the borders secure too.

  2. Give him asylum? What a joke. I’m sure he will just commit the crimes US citizens don’t want to commit.

  3. Actually, in El Salvador paramilitary ‘officials’ kill anyone with gang tats. It’s their version of crime control. Not insignificantly, US funds support these ‘officials’, if not their tactics.

  4. Although I’m the kind of person to argue against the anti-illegal crowd, even while my car gets hit twice by undocumented folks who try to flee within 3 months, I gotta give this guy a “tough shit”. I never understood why anyone would come here and think they can get away becoming a career criminal wihout any kind of deportation repricussions. I especially loathe these kind of morons, who are voluntary fodder for anti-illegal xenophobes around the nation.

Plus, if homeboy has extensive gang tattoos he probably put in a lot of work for the gang (meaning he killed or shot a few people). This idiot gets no love from me, good luck starting up a clique of wherever he’s from in El Salvador.
