UPDATE (4:48pm): The victim has been identified and the family notified – more details below.
Has a friend or neighbor suddenly gone missing?
The LAPD is asking for the public’s help in identifying a jogger who is unconcious and on life support after being struck by a vehicle near Franklin and Mariposa on Wednesday evening.
The jogger is either White or Hispanic and 20 to 30 years of age. He has black hair and brown eyes and has a tattoo of a red and yellow flower on his right arm. He stands 5′ 8″ and weighs 175 pounds.’
On August 15, 2007, at around 8:20 PM, a 1999 grey Chrysler 300, driven by a 23-year-old man, was eastbound on Franklin Avenue near Mariposa Avenue. The jogger bolted in front of the Chrysler from between parked cars. The driver of the Chrysler attempted to avoid the collision by swerving to his right but was unsuccessful and collided with the jogger.
The jogger was also wearing an iPod at the time.
If you have any information that may help, contact Detective Felix Padilla, Central Traffic Division, at 213-972-1825 or the Detective Information Desk at 1-877-LAW-FULL (877-529-3855).
This incident does highlight a couple safety tips for city joggers, runners, or anyone leaving their home for even a brief amount of exercise:
1. If you’re wearing headphones, keep the volume low enough that you can easily hear ambient sounds.
2. Always carry i.d.
Any other bits of advice?
UPDATE: Det. Padilla regretfully informs me that the while the jogger was identified, he died of his injuries. (commenter Allison Moon notes in the comments that he was id’d yesterday, and was a co-worker at the LA Gay and Lesbian Center)
However, it was through his iPod that they were able to identify him – the LAPD contacted Apple with the iPod’s serial number, and were given the victims name and contact information.
