In August 1965, a growing Memphis record label arrived in Los Angeles to show off its artist lineup, including Booker T. and The MG’s, The Astors, Wilson Pickett, and The Mar-Keys. Known as the Stax Review, they spent their days making appearances on daytime television shows including Dick Clark’s “Where the Action Is”, and then in the evening they’d perform at area nightclubs, including the 5/4 Ballroom in Watts. The day after one of these performances, the Watts riots began, trapping the musicians for a short time in the city.
Seven years later, many of the same artists returned to Los Angeles to perform at “Wattstax”, a concert Stax Records organized to commemorate the riots and encourage economic empowerment in the African American community. With a $1 ticket price, over 100,000 filled the L.A. Memorial Coliseum in what became known as “”the Afro-American answer to Woodstock”.
Tonight, Stax Records returns to Los Angeles, bringing its wide roster of legends with them. Included on the bill is Isaac Hayes (yeah, the artist formerly known as Chef… better known as the singer/songwriter of “The Theme from Shaft”), Lalah Hathaway, Angie Stone, William Bell, Mable John, Eddie Floyd, and one of my all time favorites, Booker T., who was awarded a Lifetime Achievement Grammy earlier this year.
Randy Jackson hosts the event, and the bill promises a bunch of “special guests”… which could include YOU! (although you’ll have to remain in the audience). Info on how to win after the jump…
To win of pair of tickets, I’m going to make you jump through one unusual hurdle: click that “submit a story” link in the sidebar (or here, if yer lazy), and fill out the form – somewhere in there we need your contact info+ , and you need to mention you want the passes to attend the show. You’re not obligated to, but feel free to actually suggest a story, or even where I can find the best Memphis style barbeque around L.A.
Entries must be received by noon today (yeah, short notice). Winner will be randomly selected and notified by 1pm.
