Newt Gingrich: Spanish [undefined non-English language] is “language of living in the ghetto”

Newt Gingrich denies he was talking about Spanish when asked about the following comment he made last Saturday:

“The American people believe English should be the official language of the government. … We should replace bilingual education with immersion in English so people learn the common language of the country and they learn the language of prosperity, not the language of living in a ghetto.”

When he and his staff have been questioned about this comment, they deny he meant Spanish, nor would he go on the record and specifically say “Spanish is a ghetto language.”

So, maybe our readers from somewhere outside of Los Angeles can tell us what language he refers to as being part of this offensive bilingual education? ¬øHay alguien que puede ayudar?

  1. why is everything turned into a latin/hispanic/mexican issue these days? aren’t there other ghettos besides barrios in this country, as well as many other non-latino, non-english speaking people in this country? stop turning this into US vs. Mexico.

PS: the people of arizona should be applauded for making english their official language

  2. He was talking about Spanish, have you seen this ridiculous Newt apology in Spanish? He just keeps digging a bigger hole; now he’s gone and butchered the language. At one point he says “mi espanol no es perfecto”. No shit, really? Ya callate Sr. Newt!

  3. I’ve been to the San Fernando Swap Meet. “Language of the ghetto” isn’t too far off.

  4. Oy vey. Yiddish was once the language of the ghetto too. Real ghettos, where the residents couldn’t leave.
