I’m a huge fan of Grub, the cozy-comfort-foody hideaway in Hollywood run by Top Chef contestant and local caterer Betty Fraser. So when she won the challenge that put her winning recipe on the TGI Friday’s menu, the lady and I were all set on heading out to the ‘burbs to find a Fridays and see a local hero get some hard earned national recognition. Yesterday, we finally got our chance while running errands in Covina and it did not disappoint. Mostly because I totally expected Friday’s actual implementation of Fraser’s original dish to get a bit of manhandling, and it does. It was perfectly acceptable Friday’s food, a little upscale even, but it was missing the artisanal quality that makes Grub’s similar “After School Special” (a grilled cheese/tomato soup combo) such a winner. Nothing about it was bad (except maybe that they only served us about 1/4 cup of soup), but the whole thing really just made me wish it was on Grub’s menu rather than Friday’s. From now on I’ll be staying local and scratching my cheesy-sandwich-and-soup itch at the real deal.
