Vigil For Slain Cyclist Tonight in Beverly Hills

candle.jpgMonday evening 23-year-old Ilia Pankin was cycling through the intersection of Santa Monica and Wilshire boulevards when he was struck by an SUV whose driver then fled the scene. Pankin was transported to UCLA Medical Center where he succumbed to his injuries.

On Tuesday the driver of the vehicle involved in the collision turned himself in to authorities in Beverly Hills where he has been booked on suspicion of vehicular manslaughter with gross negligence and is presently being held in lieu of $50,000 bail.

In memory of Pankin a candlelight vigil has been announced on the Midnight Ridazz website that will take place this evening at the water feature known as the Electric Fountain at the intersection of Santa Monica and Wilshire boulevards beginning at 7:30 p.m.

Members of L.A.’s cycling community are encouraged to attend and several of the IAAL‚Ä¢MAF will be deviating from our regular Wednesday evening river ride to be there. If you want to come along with us we’ll be departing from the SilverSun Plaza in Silver Lake (corner of Parkman and Sunset Boulevard) at 6:30 p.m.
