Silverlake Getting a Library

The new library is slated to break ground on a site at Silverlake Blvd and Glendale (the vacant lot that is often occupied by the Delancy Christmas Tree Lot before the holidays).

Silverlake area is far from “libraryless” as there are several quite close – the Atwater Village branch on Glendale Blvd, the very new Edendale branch on Sunset in Echo Park, the Los Feliz on Hillhurst and the Cahuenga library (built through support from Carnegie) on Santa Monica Blvd. but it will be nice to have one to call our very own.

The new library is designed by M2A – Milofsky Michali & Cox and will feature a 33 space parking lot below it (as there isn’t much street parking available at that corner) and a large multi-purpose room to go with the stacks of books, reading room looking out on a dry garden, computer use areas and large children & teen sections.

The groundbreaking should be later this year, with library opening in 2007. Keep up-to-date at Friends of Silverlake Library.

  1. I can’t tell you how pleasing it is to learn that corner won’t be turned into either a set of high-priced “lofts” or yet another minimall. Awesome news!

  2. Holy crap, that’s cool. I was dreading another mini-mall like the one they built in Atwater village. Nail salon? Box Brothers? Coldstones? Thank you! (That is a sarcastic thank you.)

  3. Im very excited. I’ve been studying at the local coffee shop just across the street for about two years now. As soon as this library is finished, I dont have to compete for space at the coffee shop.
