The Canine Cannes

Dogs and movies together at last! Not since the marriage of chocolate and peanut butter has a combination been so sweet. Dubbed “Cannes is going canine” the 2006 Dogfest Film Festival, presented by Paws LA, has its premiere on Saturday, June 17th at the Autry National Center. And to think in some countries they eat these dogs.

Each year filmmakers from all over the world submit short films or documentaries about dogs, featuring dogs, or containing thought-provoking messages about dogs, for consideration in 10 different categories. Winning films this year include Amy Nicholson’s “Beauty School” a documentary about the New York School of Dog Grooming, Tim Greenberg’s parody “La Pupp√©” about French new-wave cinema and Jim Blauvelt’s music video featuring Tyson, the skateboarding Bulldog. The entire screening totals about 60 minutes.

Other Dogfest activities will include a “Canine Midway” featuring myriad exhibitors showcasing dog-friendly products and services. There will also be demonstrations of fun doggie activities. Free “pup’corn” and doggy snacks will be handed out to all visitors.
