Is Xenu Gay? to TMZ, indie film director John Roecker was wearing his “Scientology Is Gay!” t-shirt in Los Feliz recently when he happened to bump into Jenna and Bodhi Elfman. Bodhi growled, “Hey, man, you’re making fun of my religion.”

Mr. Elfman’s ire was apparently drawn by Roecker’s self-made t-shirt, which had a picture of Tom Cruise on the front under the caption “Scientology is Gay!” and a ‘Stayin’-Alive’-era John Travolta on the back with the words “Very Gay!”

A commenter named Robyn chimed in claiming that she’s an attorney “which lends itself to a more heightened level of analysis than the average fellow American,” but made a valid point:

If Americans attacked the beliefs of Christians, Jews, Muslims. etc. with the same fervor with which they attack Scientologists, could you imagine the newspaper editorials and ensuing charges of discrimination???

  1. doesn’t our society already do this to muslims in a different way?

also, no christians or muslims had their religion made up by science fiction writers. . .

  2. To me, the whole idea behind Scientology is ridiculous, and even more so with that Hubbard quote, “I’m going to invent a religion that’s going to make me a fortune. I’m tired of writing for a penny a word.”

With that said, I fucking hate John Roecker. He’s a poor excuse for a director. Don’t believe me? Watch the shit that is Live Freaky Die Freaky, a film that Roecker described as being eye opening, but is nothing more than an excuse to make a crappy claymation film, voiced by some of today’s “punk” artists. I mean, I wasn’t expecting the film to be epic by any means, I just wasn’t prepared for it to suck so hard. I hate him so much.

  3. “also, no christians or muslims had their religion made up by science fiction writers. . .”

Maybe not *science fiction* writers per say . . .

  4. Sean’s got a fine point. There are plenty of people out there satirizing all kinds of other organized religion. The freedom to express yourself and to worship the way you see fit goes hand in hand with other people’s freedom to disagree with you, politely or not. Somehow Scientology always seems to think they should get a pass.

  5. A google search of “Jesus is gay” returns 971 hits. “Christianity is gay” brings up another 170-something. “Scientology is gay” brings up 190-something. The internet has spoken. Jesus is six times gayer than Xenu.

  6. Ha! I knew it was going to get interesting when I saw the guy in the shirt on a collision course with the Scientology booth at the Los Feliz street fair. Had to give ’em props for daring to wear such an inflamatory shirt almost in Scientology’s backyard.

Face it; all “religions” which rely on faith over logic set themselves up for ridicule, and Scientology’s obvious existence as a means of fleecing the rubes really asks for it.

“Gay”, no. Fodder for ridicule, absolutely.

  7. Why is being a Science Fiction Writer being made into such a low life profession?

I think Stephen Speilburg, Rod Sterling, Orson Wells, Jules Vernes, Robert A. Heinlein and Robert L. Sawyer just to name a few famous Science fiction writers were all notable people of there time. Just like in the 50’s you heard L.Ron Hubbard with a whole bunch of pen names. He was The man then…

If you have made more money than God and you notice that humanity doesn’t have a real Science of the Mind, Who says that, that is all your suppose to be? To be just a Science fiction writer and nothing more? Come on people. L.RON Hubbard had over 200 professions down cold. HE was a man of Genius and intellect. You think by cutting him down your going to stop the truth from coming out what he actually did for man kind?
You probably haven’t a clue and spouting off stupid covert remarks in the media, trust me is only making you look stupid, to those in the know.

The Average, the Public, the media, is definitely never concidered in the Know about any subject. Ask any one that is knowledgeable about any subject, for the same observation…

Next time you try to invalidate L.Ron Hubbard or his masterpiece Scientology, by saying well he was a Science fiction writer, look just how lame of an excuse that really is. So What, what does that have to do with anything?

Trying to make it out that Scientology is just Science fiction is only showing your ignorance. It is a fact; that when a person actually realizes what Scientology really is, he becomes one.

It is my reality most will be one in the next 5 years. Who in there right mind doesn’t want to have full use of there mind and abilities? It is for real a real SCIENCE OF THE MIND. So that makes it a religion in the purest sence of the word. TO fix the mind requires only discovering who you really are. A “Spirit”, with infinite ability and wisdom… Knowledge isn’t just having the words, you have to be the one to realize it,and you have to fix your mind so you have access to the very depths to where that knowledge lies, with in your own consciousness.

If that just sounds like Science fiction, well I am terribly sorry. Truth is one of those things that releases those abilities with in you. If you can’t have the truth. Well maybe next lifetime, we’ll catch you..

Those that had to make them selves right and the new thinkers wrong, that were saying the world was round was just doing there Scoffing too… But remember, Truth though Fought, in the end prevails.LRH This period will pass also. What side of the fence are you going to be remembered for?

  8. You’d think the first tenet of a “religion” founded by an author would be Thou Shalt Write Coherently…

  9. Maybe people (I included) making fun of Scientology so much here has to do with people being okay with making fun of their own race.
Since Scientology is more of an American phenomenon than international (it is made in US after all), it’s easier and feels less discrimatory for us to make fun.

  10. If the above poster is any indication of the greater mental powers unleashed through the “Science of the Mind”, I’d be real concerned. Spelling, one of the most basic rote learning tasks most children master, seems to elude whatever “training” the poster has undertaken. Maybe he hasn’t paid enough money to his cult in order to take the “unlock the mental power of masterful spelling & grammar” course yet?

  11. Media and celebrities make fun or insult religions all the time. Piss Christ, The Satanic Verses, Stranger in a Strange Land. If Scientologists can’t accept people making fun of XENU, the Couch Jumping Dwarf, or their demented Control Freak Founder, maybe they’re just not Perfected Thetans yet. Get over yourselves and realize that ALL religions are fair game for ridicule. As for Bodhi Elfman, calling him a celebrity is a bit of a stretch.

  12. I think the bottom line here is YOU CAN WEAR WHATEVER T SHIRT YOU WANT THIS IS AMERICA WHOOO FREEDOM. Jenna Elfman and her intolerable sitcom antics can go to Hells.

  13. Here’s my take:

As a few people have already said, John Roecker and anyone else are perfectly within their rights to wear potentially offensive t-shirts.

However, Bodhi and Jenna are also equally allowed to speak up when such expressions of free speech offend them.

Both, I believe, are jackasses. Roecker clearly wanted a reaction. This was less about a statement than about him wanting to get some attention from the shirt. After the incident, it looks like he sent an email to a number of journalists around town telling them what happened to him.

Bodhi & Jenna, by all accounts, are morons for taking the bait. They spoke up on behalf of what they believe in – but to what end? They gave Roecker the attention he wanted and made themselves, and Scientology, look silly in the long run.

Say what you will about Christians but by and large they see people trying to offend them on a daily basis. Maybe they’re numb to it, but most Christians don’t give these things any attention.

That said, most Scientologists are pretty good at not paying mind to the relentless attacks on their religion. One can only hope that this is because most of them believe enough in their faith that they can accept the skepticism in all its forms.

  14. I feel like the second you raise your voice at a stranger or threaten to attack someone (Mr. Bodhi threatened to punch him as well), you’re losing some (if not all) validity.

Hostility and shouting (to the point that traffic supposedly slowed down to watch her hysterics) at someone walking down the street with an offensive T shirt isn’t the appropriate…forum for your feelings. I really won’t defend Ms. Elfman’s actions because of
    ***etiquette*** more than anything else.

  15. “According to Roecker, whose encounter was first reported on LA’s KROQ-FM’s Kevin and Bean Show, the invective started to fly after he made several references to Scientology theology and its reported central tenant, the story of Xenu.

Roecker says Jenna repeatedly said “What crimes have you committed?” and began screaming at Roecker, “Have you raped a baby?” as motorists on Los Feliz Boulevard drove by in snarled traffic.

Roecker says it appears that Bodhi Elfman prepared to take a swing at him, but thought against it.

Bizarrely, Roecker also says that the Elfmans had a young, twenty-something male companion with them whom they continually instructed to move away and cover his ears whenever references to Xenu were made…”

Baby raping? BABY RAPING?!? Would a sane person even think to say anything like that? Scientology, with it’s irrational fear of anything promoting mental health, is an irresponsible and dangerous cult that encourages mentally ill people to hand over their checkbooks rather than seek treatment for their illnesses.

I’m an atheist, and I honestly don’t give a flying jelly donut what the hell you want to believe- I don’t force my beliefs down anyone’s throat and I expect the same courtesy in return. But Scientologists (in LA at least) are aggressive, relentless and prey on the weak and unfortunate, draining their bank accounts and then cutting them loose when they won’t enslave themselves into the “Sea Org” (a navy-type workforce that makes members sign a BILLION year contract) or keep paying paying paying for the beliefs of the cult. I don’t see other ‘religions’ doing that. It’s not tithing or donating, it’s a large-scale MLM/pyramid scam disguised as a religion. Name any other recognized religion that forces ‘worshippers’ to pay a set fee for access to part of their ‘religious’ texts… And what is the end result? Tom Cruise? Jenna Elfman? No fucking thanks. That’s not success, that’s good PR bought and paid for by slaves.

And to anyone who claims that the whole Xenu/alien belief of Scientology is not true, here is a link to the court case where the “secret” top-level “OT8” documents of Scientology were admitted into evidence:

“The case file for Church of Scientology International v. Fishman and Geertz contains over 700 documents. This web page presents a declaration filed by Steven Fishman on April 9, 1993 in which he included the OT (Operating Thetan) materials as exhibits…”

“(his)…house was raided by CoS, they took his computer. Under the writ of seizure, they were allowed only to identify files that were copyrighted bij CoS / RTC. A CoS lawyer – Kendrick Moxon, expert attorney and a senior OT – was asked to supervise this, and guess what: he identified OT8 as an RTC copyright and therefore, as a church scripture…”

Contained in the “secret” documents was this direct statement/quote from L. Ron Hubbard:

“For those of you whose Christian toes I may have stepped on, let me take the opportunity to disabuse you of some lovely myths. For instance, the historic Jesus was not nearly the sainted figure has been made out to be. In addition to being a lover of young boys and men, he was given to uncontrollable bursts of temper and hatred that belied the general message of love, understanding and other typical Marcab PR. You have only to look at the history his teachings inspired to see where it all inevitably leads. It is historic fact and yet man still clings to the ideal, so deep and insidious is the biologic implanting.” – L. Ron Hubbard

And these are the people that should have THEIR “religion” respected? I think not.

    What Scientologists believe:

    The Unfunny Truth about Scientology:

And the cease and desist order sent by Scientology’s Lawyer Army:

In closing, fuck Scientology, fuck Scientologists, fuck L.Ron Hubbard, and fuck Jenna “Baby Raper” Elfman.

  16. What Have YOU done? There is something you don’t want Scientology to know about…If you want to get better, better have a look, for your own good.

If you get “Bitter”, you won’t get “Better”, and if you get “Better” you won’t get “Bitter”. Roy Masters

Man is not perfect, if he was he would be a spirit. We in Scientology are trying our best to get man there. Since man is not perfect, there are going to be Overts and Withholds committed. These (Overts Non survival acts) are made by individual members, not the group. We know they are what destroys ones Mind and so ones life. That is why we can fix the Mind and ones life…

So Confess of your sins, Brother. Now with High Tech and all of your time track Cleaned up. See How good you can feel… You will literally “Float” right out of your body. Then you will know that , you are not your Body, that all you are is conciousness, that you are eternal. You Don’t die and you have that memory on some level and LRH found the way to retieve those memories of you…

Think your responsibility level might come up a few notches if you really knew that? If you knew what your creating you will be coming back too, if you didn’t grow up and out of? Well what do you think Scientology is all about? Really we aren’t forcing people to do the things they do, like the Press says. Just getting them to see the truth for themselves.

Any individual Member has a post or job he does. It is very easily tracked, as it is on the ORG Board (Organization board, that has the job description and who holds that post). If a member really did something as bad as your saying, which maybe they did (1978 was a long time ago) Then that person could be tracted down and held responsible. I would have thought that would have been done, if the charges were as serious as your saying.

The Point is; an individual is to blame. Why make the whole group suffer when the individual did the Act? 98% of most Scientologists are very hard working people, trying to do the right thing, and are taking responsibility for a planet (that is yours too). By hurting them your only hurting your self. Or have you not noticed the rate of insanity around us and how it is getting worse?
I wonder how much worse it would be if Millions of Scientologists, weren’t actively dedicating there lives to “Clear” this Planet? Read Dianetics and see what the state of “Clear” is all about, and see if it isn’t a good thing, and how the planet would be if everyone was at that conscious level.

If your a Scientologist, that would be your goal. It is a good goal and to slow down that progress by being stuck on some mistakes that were made in the past, is not fair, for the rest of us who have dedicated our lives.

If it is such a tramatic incident for you , put your efforts in finding out who perpetrated the act or acts that you are concerned about and go after them. Don’t destroy the whole group, that is insane…

Man is an insane “Spiritual Being”. Scientology has the technology to make man sane and Spiritual again. Trust me everyone wants what you achieve if you grow. So the ones stopping that movement, in time will be looked at as truly insane. Your time is coming better realize what your doing. The truth though Fought always in the end Prevails. LRH

Find out what Scientology really is all about and realize people make mistakes. Look at the over all goals and what the group is actually achieving.

I am very proud to be a Scientologist, as I know what my group is doing, as I can see the good, as I am not Bitter.

If your bitter you only look for the bad, the things to justify the bad deeds YOU have done. That is the basics, Brother and if you want to grow, you better get rid of that Bitterness. That is the very thing that put you down at the level of man and took your personal memory away, so you can’t know and get out of the trap… You are in a trap and most aren’t even aware there in. This is a Deadly serious trap were involved in; your Eternity is at Stake. If you have to believe in something, believe me, That I know, That is why I am a Scientologist.

A person becomes a Scientologist when they realize for themselves. Hopefully in time everyone will be a Scientologist. They will, when they see the truth for themselves. Your lies and your Game are just slowing down the Whole process.

When your all upset your introverted and won’t see the why of your condition. Scientology removes the charge and upset and makes you Extroverted. Who survives better one who is introverted or extroverted? Don’t you think people would rather be an Extrovert?

You have to look for your self to realize things. Realizations are the only thing that will change you. To grow there is a lot of changing to be done, better start; It is a long route to GOD or your “Native State”. You have an eternity to realize, but when one has lost his memory, he has lost his way out of the trap. Hell is eternal. Hell is for those that don’t know who they are.

Scientology is a good route to do that that I have found. There may be a better way, if there is I haven’t realized it. It changes you incredibly fast. It gets back your spiritual Memory of you and Frees you from the Low concious level of the “Physical”, so you can know what it is really all about. You can achieve a higher reality level on life, much much higher. Look at ones ability level, that is the clue, if they are growing or not… What if that were the truth? Think of the ramifications of what Scientology means, for real.

Think of what you are doing? Suppressing man is an Overt too ya know, it will trap you just as bad as killing someone… It makes you Bitter… Any time you do Overt acts against someone or some group, you are going to become bitter and make your self right, by becoming critical of them. You will start Fault finding, Pretty soon you won’t see them for who they really are…

This is not my Belief as Scientology is not a Belief System. It is an observance. Any one whith the charge(Upset or Bitterness) off there Case will see the truth of things. Perhaps some day you might realize it or observe it for yourself.

That is how you know in Scientology It is not crammed down your throat, or your not forced to believe Dogma. Like guys like you lead others to believe. It is a very personal thing to GROW…Think about it. Better yet Look for yourself, then you too can know. Its your eternity…

  17. I am amazed by the post by the scientologist above. Seems to illustrate a certain truth.

I do think the connection to a science fiction writer is relevant because it seems that the scientology “religion” tries to masquerade as science, it has to have a veneer of science fact, just as the best science fiction often does.

Anyway, the whole scientology thing saddens me.

  18. There is a short story by PKD(a friend/associate of Hubbard), in which a science fiction writer with a name very similar phoneticly to L Ron Hubbard, creates a religion which eventually takes over the world. This is discovered by the protoganist of the story, who is a follower of the religion way way in the future. The story was published prior to Scientology being formed. Food for thought.
