Earlier today Gita, the 48 year old female Asian elephant who had lived at the LA Zoo since 1959, passed away. She had been experiencing health problems in the last few years, including foot problems which required the crafting of a giant orthopedic shoe. 48 years old is consider elderly for wild elephants, but it won’t stop critics from saying that she was mistreated. The city did a study and found that the animals are treated well, but that they don’t have enough space, and it turn the city has approved a $39 million elephant area that will include watering holes and a variety of turf for their walking pleasure. This is the second elderly pachyderm to pass away at the zoo in as many years. It is too bad that she won’t get to hang out in the new enclosure being built, but I guess that leaves more room for Ruby.
