I’ve already mentioned the L.A.-based The Ditty Bops (MySpace) in my recent profiles of Vagenius and The Dresden Dolls, and while The Ditty Bops been mentioned here at B.la several times already, now’s as good a time as any to profile them.
Abby and Amanda’s blend of folk, swing, ragtime, and jazz, coupled with their quirky sense of humor and theatrical antics, is so unique, that it’s not surprising that they were signed by Warner Bros. Records after a performance at Molly Malones.
Since then, they’ve opened for Nancy Sinatra, The Dresden Dolls (MySpace), Tegan & Sara (MySpace), Nickel Creek (MySpace), and Tori Amos (MySpace), appeared on Late Night With Conan O’Brien, Late Late Show With Craig Ferguson, Morning Becomes Eclectic, and A Prairie Home Companion (twice!), and five of their songs were heard on the first season of Grey’s Anatomy. Their fans include Garrison Keillor, Neil Gaiman, and Wil. They released their 2006 Bicycle Bikini Calendar late last year, and in January, they officially came out of the closet with their seven year relationship in a profile that was published in the locally-produced Frontiers magazine.
More after the jump.
Their sophomore album, Moon Over The Freeway, streets on May 23rd, and a two track single with “Angel With An Attitude” and “Fall Awake” was recently released to digital music stores.
This week, they embark on the second leg of their second tour with Nickel Creek, and starting on May 25th, The Ditty Bops will be departing from L.A. and embarking on a summer cross-country bicycle tour to New York City:
