USC Springfest…

Okay, so if BDSM and MMA aren’t your thing, how about some free music this weekend?

This Saturday is the USC Springfest at the McCarthy Quad, and it’s also LosanjealousPick of the Week: “Aside from its music acts, Saturday’s Springfest features henna tattoo artists, pro skaters and fire dancers. How any of this is related to Spring beats the fuck out of me but it’s free.”

The lineup includes: Mos Def, Chali 2na (of Jurassic 5), Ozma, Saul Williams, Braddigan (of Dispatch), MC Supernatural, Melee, The Pink Spiders, Open Hand, Goldspot, Wires on Fire, Vagenius, Phoenix & The Turtle, Malbec, Curtis Peoples, and Autonym.

Although it’s early in the festival schedule, my recommendation is the L.A.-based Vagenius (MySpace), soon to be renamed Hello Stranger, at 1:00 PM 1:20 PM on the Side Stage. I first became aware of this band two years ago at The Joint, where they headlined with The Ditty Bops (MySpace) and Loquat (MySpace), and immediately fell in love with their music. Since then, Vagenius has opened for Kings of Leon, played a month-long residency at Spaceland, been selected as one of the “bands to watch” in the March issue of SPIN Magazine (which covered the Silver Lake music scene), and will be releasing their debut album in May. Their next performances are on April 27th at The Viper Room and May 3rd with Morningwood at The Roxy. If you are able to catch them on Saturday, brace yourself for lead singer Juliette’s signature keytars, knee-high boots, and seductive yet rockin’ renditions of their songs “Which Side,” “Take It To The Maxx,” and “All Mine.”

UPDATE: Here’s the schedule (via Losanjealous).

  1. Oddly enough, I haven’t been able to find a schedule for Springfest yet.

As for Mos Def, Losanjealous says: “Mos Def should be on at 9:30 roughly so plan accordingly.”
