Move it, Granny!

Alright, youngsters, time to stop complaining that the police are harrassing you based on your age and because they ain’t got nothing better to do… The LAPD recently ticketed an 84 year old woman for taking too long to cross the street.

Mayvis Coyle said she began shuffling with her cane across Foothill Boulevard in the San Fernando Valley when the light was green, but was unable to make it to the other side before it turned red.

She said the motorcycle officer who ticketed her on Feb. 15 told her she was obstructing traffic.

“I think it’s completely outrageous,” said Coyle, who described herself as a Cherokee medicine woman. “He treated me like a 6-year-old, like I don’t know what I’m doing.” (from the Monterey Herald

The crosswalk in question apparently has a light too quick for even young whippersnappers to make it through safely, changing from “green to red in 20 seconds.”

  1. This was also on the front page of the Daily News yesterday.

It’s not like she was dancing a jig in the middle of an intersection… she was trying to cross the street. Geez.

  2. I heard a report about this on the radio and they were saying that there is actually a 4 feet/second speed requirement for pedestrians in crosswalks. I don’t know if that was a county thing or a city thing or what.

  3. The LAPD are a bunch of racist cowboys out for a good time with public funding and … guns. Yee hah! What particular crime have they solved here? The lady is 82 years old, give her a break or maybe help her cross the street. Is that what the “serve” part of “To Protect and to Serve” scribbled on the side of the squad cars is all about? But these knuckleheads act like John Wayne constantly and as a result lose the respect of the people. Thus the only people they actually protect and serve are themselves. Really, the LAPD can take it up the kazoo on this one.
