LASD playing with model planes?

Well, not exactly.

From Boing Boing: The military has been using UAVs (Unmanned Aerial Vehicles) overseas for a while, and homeland law enforcement is trying them out now too. The Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department is testing the “Skyseeker” drone for foot pursuits and other possible uses. The small aircraft, controlled remotely (it has a camera which sends feed back to HQ), can get much closer than a helicopter. I imagine it also would not wake me up in the middle of the night, which helicopters tend to do. There are privacy concerns, of course, but at a glance I think this is wicked cool.
