Corinne Bailey Rae At The Hotel Cafe…

DSC_0380dxx.jpgI had already made plans to see Kate Earl (MySpace) perform at the Hotel Cafe on Wednesday, but I was pleasantly surprised to find that Corinne Bailey Rae (MySpace) was opening for her.

At the risk of sounding like a complete n00b, I hadn’t heard much about Corinne until I discovered that she’s from the U.K., that she’s been labelled as the black or soulful version of Norah Jones, and that her self-titled album rocketed to the top of the charts when it was released across the Atlantic (in fact, on it’s currently ranked at #2).

Needless to say, due to the heavy buzz about her and airplay of her songs such as “Like a Star” out here on KCRW, the Hotel Cafe was absolutely packed like the proverbial sardines for Corinne’s performance, which was probably her first Stateside performance and perhaps even a warmup for her appearance at SXSW this week. It was so important that two of the tables in the front were reserved for Capitol Records staff.

If you weren’t there, don’t fret… she said during her set that she’ll be making her return in June.

More photos of Corinne’s performance here and Kate’s performance here.

  1. Honestly? I’m retarded when it comes to reviewing shows, and they certainly won’t be up to the level of someone like The Village Indian/Stereogum. But since you asked, she was great and had the audience enthralled with her voice and her music. I don’t think anyone was disappointed with her performance.
