L.A. Song

Courtesy of our friends over at MeFi comes this great Ask Metafilter thread from someone seeking to make a mix tape for a friend moving to L.A. When asked what their favorite songs about L.A. were, the MeFi folks responded with some great ones: “Los Angeles, I’m Yours” by the Decembrists, “Screenwriter’s Blues” by Soul Coughing, “L.A. is my Lady” by the inimitable Frank Sinatra, and “Hollywood Babylon” by the Misfits, to name a few. There are a ton of good L.A.-related songs recommended in the thread, but I want to know: what are some of your favorites?

  1. A few that spring to mind immediately

    I Love L.A. (Randy Newman)

    Los Angelenos (Billy Joel)

City of the Sun (Kevin Gilbert)

I actually have (had, really, it got accidentally deleted although the songs are still there) an L.A. playlist in iTunes.

  2. i made an LA-mixtape that I need to post here soon. it’s features everything from Guns N Roses, Deathcab for Cutie, Beulah, X, Tupac, The Game, Luna and MORE!

  3. Go Betty Go – I’m From L.A.
    X – Los Angeles
Missing Persons – Nobody Walks In L.A.
    RHCP – Under the Bridge
    The Like – June Gloom
    Weezer – Beverly Hills

…that’s all I can think of offhand. I always associate Sisters of Mercy’s “Detonation Blvd” with L.A., but that’s just for the line, “through the angel rain, through the dust and gasoline,”

  4. “More Bounce (In California)” – Soul Kid #1
Blast when you’re stuck on the Hollywood freeway, because there’s a funny line about it.

  5. “We are all going to Reseeeda in some way or another … to DIE …”

    Heh. I love Soul Coughing.

Add to this virtually everything Stan Ridgway ever wrote (e.g. “Call of the West,” “Drive, She Said,” and Down the Coast Highway“, etc etc. Guy’s the unsung late 20th-century poet of Lost Angelenos.

Oh, and everything Los Lobos ever put out, and Crystal Method, and Roy Rogers, and Ozomatli, and …

  6. California Love – 2Pac, Dr Dre, and Roger Troutman

Los Angeles is Burning – Bad Religion

California Dreamin’ (Club House Single) – Royal Gigolos.

    Aenema – Tool

A Long December – Counting Crows

    Bunker Hill – Michael Penn

    Fallen Angel – Poison

  7. atmosphere – los angeles

Death Cab for Cutie – Why You’d Want to Live Here

this is a personal favorite, especially blasting it to or from work with my windows rolled down.

  8. Warren Zevon’s “Even the Dog Can Shake Hands”

    Beach Boys’ “Surfin’ USA”

    Beck “Debra”

  9. Hollywood Swingin’ – Kool & Gang/Jamiroqai

Under the Bridge – Red Hot Chili Peppers

I’m goin back to Cali – LL Cool J

  10. “Beverly Hills” – Circle Jerks

When I graduated high school and was about to go to UCLA, one of my best friends gave me a mix with that song and said, “You’ll need this to survive living by UCLA.” I listened to it everyday.

  11. Cheese Us, nobody posted “Going to California” by Led Zeppelin?

Coincidentally, that song was playing at random on the radio when I got on the highway to come to L.A. back in ’89…
