I have a friend from Portland coming to town at the end of the month to participate in the artLA fair. Any recommendations for nice, yet affordable, hotels in the Santa Monica area? Since I really never venture further west than Culver City, I’m at a loss. Any info would be great!

How about the Best Western filled with Larry Bell art? It’s in Venice:

Damn.
A billion years ago, when I was in advertising and yet still perverse enough to refuse shelter where I had to put up with valet parking, I used to stay at the Shangri-la when I was in town. It was really inexpensive compared to the fancy SM hotels. But I don’t know what prices are like now. Probably nuts, like anywhere by the beach.
Hi
I’m not affiliated with any of these, but they are in my database of Westside / Santa Monica hotels.
You might want to call them and do some checking. Also use the AAA travel book to do some more comparisons.
Hope it helps!
