Debit Card Fees?

Following up on my earlier post about carrying enough cash, I went to get gas at a local ARCO gas station this morning since it was my turn to drive as part of the carpool ritual.

And I noticed that the surcharge to pay for gas with a debit card has spiked upwards from $0.30 to $0.45. Yikes! This must have happened within the past two weeks. As if the price of gas wasn’t high enough, now debit card transaction fees have almost doubled.

  1. What adds further insult to that is the fact that only ARCOs charge the fee and with that added cost it actually ends up costing the same if not more than the higher priced chains like 76 and Shell.

  2. I only stop by ARCO when I have cash in hand. The 45 cent charge totally ruins the lower prices of gas they offer. *shakes fist at ARCO

  3. Heck, they did that here in Phoenix several weeks ago, when gas prices started spiking. This was well before Katrina, too. I was a little upset, but it was 35 cents before, so it wasn’t a huge ding to me.

  4. I agree with what Gregg said. A lot of the time, they don’t even take credit cards but they do take ATM cards… which also carry a relatively substantial fee.

ARCO is never noticably cheaper after the fees unless you carry cash with you… and these days, with current gas prices, it has to be a LOT of gas.
