It’s Hispanic Heritage Month, but don’t call me Hispanic

It’s that time of the year again, time for Hispanic Heritage Month.

When I was younger I wondered why it started in the middle of the month, but now it makes a lot more sense. Mid-September marks the indpendence days of a number of Latin American countries. Tonight, you just might here Mexicans yelling and participating in “el grito” on the eve of Mexican Independence Day.

I don’t take the month too seriously because I’m always celebrating my heritage even though I reject the term Hispanic. Since I’m all about education, I thought it would be nice to have “fun facts” similar to the ones Lalo Alcaraz is featuring in his comic strip, La Cucaracha

First up: what’s in a name?
