Possible Terrorist Attack In L.A.?

Hmmm:

Well guys – a friend of mine who was an Army Ranger in Special Forces has some buddies who are still in the military….and he heard from one of them yesterday that they were deploying a bunch of special ops troops to LA. Apparantly there’s a threat of some chemical warfare going to occur there. I don’t mean to be an alarmest..but I know this guy knows what he’s talking about..and wouldn’t have told me if he wasn’t concerned. Things are escalating in the middle east and they’re expecting retribution here.

just think about how you’d quickly get out of the city if you had to.

And:

don’t know if any of you have friends in LA – but thought you might want to pass along if you did. P was in Black Hawk Down – – I know (and have met a couple of) the types of guys he knows and they don’t fuck around.

I can be rather cynical, so I was set to chalk these e-mails (which I received from a colleague here at work) to an Internet rumor, but the e-mail chain is pretty short and these e-mails don’t seem to originate from a bullshit source per se. At the same time, I can be rather gullible, so has anyone else has received this yet?

UPDATE: I should add that I get these sort of e-mails from time to time, and I discard the majority of them. However, there was something about this particular one that seemed legit, so at the risk of sounding like Chicken Little, I decided to post about it. If nothing happens, so be it.

UPDATE #2: Brian Humphrey chimes in with his perspective:

While I can’t profess any insight into military matters (real or imagined), I can say that there is often a rotating presence of military men and women in the greater Los Angeles area for the most benign of reasons. Sometimes its training, other times its pre-deployment gatherings… and believe it or not, some of these folks actually live and work here!

If the “friend of a friend” were truly holding a sensitive position with a “Special Operations” unit, he or she would never violate OpSec by sharing sensitive deployment information.

Then again, maybe these hard-working and highly capable men and women are simply coming to town for this boot camp.

Please remember: The primary tool of terrorists, and one that eclipses all others, is fear. You can disarm terrorists by being ready and not afraid.

  1. I’ve actually heard that LA is a poor choice of targets for most types of terrorists attacks (beyond the symbolic) – we’re too spread out to really maximize damage, chem/bio or explosive, and denser cities like NYC or SF make more sense.

At least this is what I always comfort myself with….

  2. We’re going to be fine.

I have this terrorist-repelling rock, and it works like a charm.

If anyone else wants one, let me know, and I’ll sell you your very own for just $5.00.

  3. I have to put my money on Lisa’s logic on this one. Long before 9/11 the CIA released a study revealing that a terrorist chemical blast in dense downtown San Francisco would cause immeasureable deaths because the prevailing winds off the bay would cause the offending agent to drift into the East and North Bay area. Sort of a two-for-the-price-of-one chemical attack. The L.A. landscape simply doesn’t provide such an overkill opportunity.

And I would be very, very suspicious of that e-mail for one solid reason: all urban myths always have a “friend of a friend” component and that friend of a friend always “knows what he’s talking about.”

  4. Talk about killing two birds with one (terrorist repelling) stone…

If we could just get the Army to move all of the sea lions down to Gitmo, that would save L.A. from a chemical attack *and* The O.C. from boat sinking terrorists.

  6. There are always military and police FOAF legends going around. I’ve heard them from active duty military and they’re still always nonsense. It’s always “I can’t tell you too much, but I heard that something bad is happening and everyone who knows is preparing by doing secret things” and then nothing happens. Classic urban legend material.
