Poker, anyone?

The LA Downtown News profiled a little poker game here in the Brewery last month. I hadn’t played with them at the time, but I knew of the game, since the players were mostly people from my building or people who I’ve encountered in the bar. (Ah, the beauty of having a bar/restaurant in your apartment complex.) I’d link directly to the Downtown News article, but they require subscription for older articles, so instead I will tell you what happened there tonight.

I totally lost my ass.

I don’t know what my problem was. I’m usually a tight-ish player – I’m definitely not aggressive, but this time I was calling on hands that I should’ve thrown away before the flop. And I knew it, too. I think someone was fucking up my Qi. Anyway, my cohorts are getting better since they play several times a week, while I’m usually traveling, so their strategies are changing, every single game. This makes it more difficult for me to read them. Dammit.

Anyway, I’ve heard through the grapevine that there are several regular poker games throughout our complex. I wonder if the same is occurring in other neighborhoods. Anyone have a neighborhood or regular group poker game going on? I know it’s popular right now, but I want to see what the rest of the city is doing outside our little compound of (apparently poker-obsessed) artists.

P.S. Both the host of tonight’s game and I own poker table tops; the host has 2. I also have a set of chips and some Copag cards. We’re disturbingly into it. Anyone else?

  1. I’ve played 5 & 7 card stud and draw since I was a child, never Texas Holdem. Since I moved from NYC to helLA in ’99 I haven’t played a single hand. Blackjack is my game when I’m away in Nevada.

I’d be be willing to lose some coin!

  2. No games in the La Brea area (yet). I’m still pretty new though. There are SO many people here that I’m sure I could get a game going.

  3. I had a couple regular games going when I lived in the valley but since I moved over the hill nothing regular going on. Always looking for a friendly game though.

  4. I’ve been playing with about 5-7 buddies every other night for the past month. However, we most likely won’t be getting together as much anymore as the summer comes to an end, but it’s been a great month of Hold ’em poker.

  5. i have a game downtown, it was also profiled in that same downtown news article. we play texas hold ’em. five to seven usually show but there are about a dozen of us total, made up of writers, producers, photographer, painter, and other artistic types. the game’s been going on for about five years but i’ve only been playing with them for a few months.
