Give A Little Bit

If you haven’t met Laura yet, consider visiting her unblinking blog, Kevin’s Dead Cat, to expand your definitions of tough and resilient as you find out what it’s like coping with throat cancer.

“After surgery sliced off an entire tumor and 1/3 of my tongue, plus six weeks of radiation therapy, I’ve been re-learning how to eat, drink, and talk with my newly re-constructed tongue and coping with side effects. But the cancer came back and I don’t know what’s going to happen next.”

Well, one of the things that’s happening next is something I found out about when Kevin Roderick posted it to L.A. Observed a few days ago: an August 26 blood drive being organized for Laura by her friend Ali to build up a supply that will help see Laura through any transfusions that might be needed during her ongoing chemotherapy treatment.

My friends from Kaiser will be drawing your blood at the penthouse of
my friend, Adam (home of the best views in LA). The Blood Drive will be
held from 11 a.m. – 7 p.m. on August 26th. I need 50 people to set this up, so email me or call me to setup an appointment ASAP ó appointments can be at
the top of each hour to cut down your wait. The drive will start by
appointment at 11 a.m. and continue until all the people signed up are
done. Call or Email (714/715-1685, [email protected]). The goal is 200 people.

I’m inked to give for Laura at noon ó and it’s not because each donor will be receiving “a gift bag that will include a Mega Millions Lotto Ticket and a certificate for a free pint of beer from Cole’s, nor is it because all donors are invited to the after-drive party at Cole’s hosted by Ali and featuring the band I See Hawks in L.A. I’m doing it because Laura needs my help. And yours, too.

  1. I’m so glad to see you mention Laura’s blog. I found it by chance a few months back, hitting the “next blog” button, and I’ve been going back again and again to read about how she gets through the day-to-day under remarkable and difficult circumstances.

A friend and I were just talking about her tonight and how tough and cool she seems. We’re not anywhere near LA (we’re in DC), but I would be signing up for the penthouse blood drive if I were. :-(

I’ll donate here in DC and I’ll post something to my blog to encourage folks to do the same.

  2. Thanks for posting the information Will, my sister Laura really appreciates it. She’s currently in the hospital, fighting an infection in her lungs, but she should be released in the next few days. Last night she asked for a computer so she could blog, so you should see another post from her soon.

We’re still not anywhere near our goal, so please make an appointment to donate blood. We’re working on a free shuttle service for donors (details tomorrow), but if you can’t donate on that day or make the party, you can still make an appointment and help Laura:

Kaiser Permanente Blood Drive Appointment Center
    Marliz Triggs
Call 323-783-6667 to make an appointment
Please mention Laura Esguerra and Ali Mazarei Blood Drive
(so that Laura will get the credit)

Thanks again for all the help and support.
