Space Shuttle May Land at Edwards

I was just reading that the Space Shuttle Discovery may not be able to land in Florida because of the weather and their second choice is always Edwards.

I remember the last time it landed in California was back in ’92 and the sonic boom rattled folks here in LA (it felt to me like someone had just landed on the roof).

So, my big question I’m putting out there is, if the shuttle were to land at Edwards, where’s a good place to go watch it? Have any of you seen it land (hell, tell me your launch stories too!)? This might be the last flight of a Space Shuttle and if it’s not too tricky, I’d like to see it come back to earth in our back yard. I haven’t found anything that would give us precise directions as to how it would approach Edwards, what time and viewing information.

  1. I was wondering the same thing.
Unfortunately, according to the Edwards Air Force Base web site:
“Edwards will not be open to the public if the Space Shuttle is forced to land at Edwards due to bad weather in Florida. People who desire entry will be turned away at the gate. Due to the size of the base and the time of day, there are no recommended locations off base to view the shuttle landing.”
Bastards. I guess we’ll all just have to be happy with being awoken with a sonic boom.

  2. Aw, that’s disappointing. I spent a bit of time trying to get to the Edwards website this afternoon but kept timing out, thanks for finding that.

Still, maybe we can see the plasma trail…I’ll keep hunting around for more info.

  3. it has landed at edwards at least three times since 2000, when i moved to los angeles. twice i went up (once lost, once late) and the third time i heard the double booms while at work. come to think of it, i believe there was a fourth time, since i remember a second incidence of double booms in a different location at work. can’t find a good reference though …

  4. Hey – just heard the big double boom here in Santa Monica – rattled the doors and scared the cats!

It’s the second time I’ve heard it, it’s really distictive.
