Limited Visibility

I was all excited for this weekend. Today was supposed to be my first trip as a Whale Watch Naturalist for the Cabrillo Marine Aquarium. Think of it as a docent for the high seas!

Unfortunately, the weather has meant small craft advisories and visibility limited to a quarter mile all weekend and no one’s going out.

I’ve been faithfully commuting to San Pedro once a week for a class since October in preparation for this moment. I was looking forward to posting photos of whale flukes and bow-riding dolphins this afternoon. I got a new telephoto lens for my camera and new binoculars. Alas, it is not meant to be. Yet.

The good news is that the Pacific Gray Whales are migrating and the whale census taken from Palos Verdes has already sighted their first calves of the season.

There is only one landing going out for the rest of January – that’s Redondo Sport Fishing. But come February two others will also offer tours out of LA county – Long Beach Sportfishing and Spirit Cruises – Ports o’ Call.

  1. Dang, I’m sorry the weather conspired to keep you off of the water. I’m very much looking forward to your photos รณ especially with the new lens addition.

  2. That blows! I’m looking to go out up here in SF and see what it’s like. I heard it’s pretty good watching up here. It was never really spectacular out of Long Beach but it was fun just going out. Better luck next time matey!
