Don’t Shoot! See, We told you!

On New Years Wil and I posted about people shooting guns off to celebrate. I got a few e-mails from people (presumably who don’t live in LA) speculating that we were making this up. How could I prove such a thing? The other day I saw a billboard that backed up the claim but I didn’t get a chance to take a picture. Lucky for me, Colleen was able to snap a few shots.

Just in case you can’t read it, it says “DON’T SHOOT! Celebrate the Holidays Safely!” When I tool my handgun safety test there was a question about this, something like “True or False, it’s only OK to fire your handgun into the air on New Years Eve or Fourth of July.” I laughed when I read it, checked false and assumed that was a freebee – apparently it wasn’t and some people think it’s True.

  1. No fair, you have a cool billboard urging people not to shot. We just have our hiphop mayor reminding people not to fire any guns in celebration. Didn’t work though – I know I heard gunfire on NYE here in Detroit….

  2. Yeah, we have the same problem here near Wichita, KS. The TV ads say, “What goes up, must come down!”

  3. Hi, I’m from the Orlando Metroblog and just happened to see your post. This actually happened this New Years Eve here in Orlando, FL. A group of people were outside watching neighborhood fireworks and all of a sudden one guy falls down. They thought he was having a heart attack and then later saw blood from a gun shot. Turns out, some one in his area, shoot a rifle up in the air at the stroke of midnight and well like they say what goes up must come down. The guy died later that day.
