SoCal, represent!

Even if you don’t follow baseball, you have to dig outfielder Steve Finley hitting a grand slam to win the game today versus the hated Giants — the next-to-last game of the season — and to clinch the National League West Championship. This means they will be in the playoffs for the first time in a while and have the opportunity to win their first playoff game in even longer. Go Blue!

And never mind if we tease our neighbors to the south, the Angels also clinched a title today, the American League West Championship — it’s been quite some time for them, too — by beating the Oakland Athletics. (Condolences to my buddy Tom, DC metroblogger and A’s fan.)

So it took 161 games out of 162 each for the Dodgers and Angels to lock it up, but congratulations to our two SoCal teams. And dig the fact that these two teams have never been in the playoffs the same year. Granted, there is still a long way to go, but can anybody say Freeway Series? ;)

  1. I was in Chavez Ravine this afternoon. I have to admit that the first eight innings of the game were somewhat disappointing. The fans hung in there, though. There must’ve been at least 50,000 still in the park in the bottom of the ninth. When Finley slammed that ball the roar was deafening! GO BLUE!

  2. I also was there. It was boring during the first 8 innings but it was completely thrilling in the 9th inning! No one could believe it! It was really an amazing game!!
