Where to study conversational Spanish in LA?

A friend of mine is looking for a good place to study conversational Spanish in LA. Berlitz is lame. Hunting and pecking through ads at the Coffee table isn’t working out for her, either. Any suggestions? The purpose is to be able to speak fluent, conversational Spanish with friends and business associates in Southern California, Mexico, and Central America. Post any pointers in the comments section, and thanks!

  1. Is your friend afraid of Spanish speaking people? This is LA the best way to learn conversational Spanish is from a Spanish speaking person. I’m sure someone would be glad to tutor her/him for cheap. There are many community colleges also.

  2. > Evidently not, smartypants, she’s friends with me. The ability to speak a language and teach it are two different things, and she definitely wants a native speaker as a teacher, preferably from Mexico or Central America because those are the places where most of her Spanish-speaking friends and business associates are located. Community colleges are cheap and they’re great if you need a degree, but they aren’t always the best place for intensive, fast-track, practical foreign language study.

That’s a good point. However, I know people that have had good experiences with both Japanese and Spanish courses at LACC (at Vermont and Melrose). These were extension/night courses, though. Not regular catalogue courses during the day. And it’s only like $12/class, so if it’s not quite what she’s looking for it’s not a big loss.

  4. there is a place called beverly hills lingual institute that promises to be not so outrageous for a 2 month term of 8 weekly 1 1/2 hour classes. i was going to look into it for french classes. i am a native speaker from mexico, if she wants cheap conversational tutoring–i’ve helped a few friends. oh, this bh place also teaches japanese, fyi. i don’t think they have a website, but the number i jotted down is 310-858-0717.
