Win Tickets To Rare Screening Of ‘Rottweiler’ in 3-D

August 26, 2010 in Contests, Downtown, Events, Filmmaking/Filmmakers

08/28/10 EVENT HAS BEEN POSTPONED UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE.

We’re giving away tickets to an ultra-rare 3-D screening of the 80s indie horror film Rottweiler: Dogs of Hell. The event is being presented by the LA3DClub this coming Sunday, August 29 at 7:30 pm at the Downtown Independent. Lenny Lipton and Chris Condon, the two legendary 3-D experts behind this production, will appear for a Q&A following the movie. This one-time only screening is a unique opportunity to see one of the few indie feature films from the wave of stereoscopic movies in the 1980s.

I strongly encourage anyone who has not been to the Downtown Independent, L.A.’s only indie-friendly 3-D cinema, to do so. They host a wide variety of interesting programming and and events.

If you would like to win a pair of tickets to the Rottweiler screening, leave a comment telling me why you want to see the movie, or, tell me what your favorite 80s 3-D movie is. I’ll notify one lucky winner by email this Saturday morning.

Click here for more information on this Sunday’s events, which, in addition to the feature film, include a free 3-D short film showcase and potluck barbecue at the theater’s rooftop bar.

7th Annual Los Angeles 3-D Movie Festival This Weekend

May 13, 2010 in Downtown, Events, Filmmaking/Filmmakers, Movies

This weekend, three of my favorite things are coming together. Downtown L.A., 3-D, and the Downtown Independent Theater. If you haven’t been to this venue yet, you are missing out. Also, you have a great opportunity to visit the theater this weekend for an independent 3-D film festival.

The Stereo Club of Southern California is hosting the 7th Annual Los Angeles 3-D Movie Festival this Saturday, May 15th, 2010, at the Downtown Independent Theater. The festival will present a special 3-D theatrical premiere screening of Dark Country, the feature film directorial debut of actor Thomas Jane. The festival will also showcase a selection of over twenty international 3-D shorts in competition, stereoscopic art installations, and demonstrations of do-it-yourself 3-D production.

The festival begins at 1pm, with the first block of 3-D shorts in competition followed by a free demonstration of 3-DIY: Do-It-Yourself 3-D at 3pm. The second block of shorts is at 4pm. The evening’s events begin at 8pm, with the presentation of the Jury Awards and the Premiere Screening of Dark Country, culminating with a reception and after-party on the theater rooftop. This may be your one and only chance to see Dark Country in a theater and the way it was meant to be seen in glorious 3-D.

All events will be held at the Downtown Independent Theater, 251 S. Main street, Los Angeles, CA, 90012. For more info and the complete schedule, visit the festival website. Advance tickets are available online.

Charles Phoenix & The Third Dimension

May 8, 2010 in Announcements, Downtown, Entertainment, Events, History

I can’t tell you how excited I am that SoCal author and Kodachrome enthusiast  Charles Phoenix is presenting a vintage 3-D slide show this weekend and next! While well known for his kitschy retro Kodachrome slide shows, this foray into the third dimension is taking things to a whole new level.

This is a unique opportunity to see 3-D images like you may have never seen them before, along with commentary from one of L.A.’s most entertaining local treasures. The photographic journey will travel as far back as the Victorian era, a time when viewing 3-D photos on cards through a stereoscope was a popular form of entertainment, to the 1940s and 50s, when View-Master disks were introduced as an alternative to the scenic postcard. This is going to be an extravaganza not to be missed!

Charles Phoenix will be presenting his first ever retro 3-D slide show tomorrow, Sunday, May 9th and on Sunday, May 16th at 3pm at the Downtown Independent, which is located at 251 S. Main St., L.A. 90012.

You can click here to purchase tickets.

Independent 3-D Film Comes To Downtown L.A.-TONIGHT!

January 27, 2010 in Announcements, Downtown, Events, Filmmaking/Filmmakers

45b746ca3769e280_landingLast August, the L.A. 3-D Club participated in the Downtown Film Festival and presented an international program of 3-D shorts. Since then, the organization has worked on forming a partnership with the Downtown Independent Theater to provide a venue to show independent 3-D movies. Thanks to a generous silver screen donation from USC and the club’s recent acquisition of a pair of large venue projectors, the theater is fully outfitted for 3-D.

Tonight, the L.A. 3-D Club’s Movie Division is holding an “Open Screen 3-D Movie Night.” Anyone is invited to bring their stereoscopic video content to add to the mix. The club will continue to curate monthly public screenings at the Downtown Independent. By the way, if you haven’t checked out this theater yet, you are missing out. It’s gorgeous and has a fun vibe.

3-DIY: Do It Yourself 3-D Movies @ Downtown Film Fest LA

August 17, 2009 in Announcements, Downtown, Events, Filmmaking/Filmmakers

3dDid you know that there is a worldwide community of filmmakers who are creating independent 3-D movies without the backing of Hollywood studios? Well, there is. The L.A. 3-D Club‘s Movie Division has teamed up with the Downtown Film Festival-Los Angeles (DFFLA) to celebrate the current wave of do-it-yourself stereoscopic motion picture production.

The DFFLA is presenting an international program of 3-D shorts on Tuesday, August 18, 2009 at the Downtown Independent, a new film and event center. I participated in a couple of the projects, including a movie that features one of my dogs, Rusty. Following the screening, a panel of talented filmmakers will convene to discuss making your own 3-D films. A rooftop wine and cheese reception will follow.

The 3-DIY event is tomorrow, Tuesday, August 18th, 7:30pm at the Downtown Independent, which is located at 251 S. Main St. Click here for the complete list of films and ticket information.
