Monrovia Association of Fine Arts (MAFA) is adding a Chalk Art Festival to its already established Celebrate the Arts. The show will be held September 26 and 27 with the Chalk Art produced and judged on the 26th. Celebrate the Arts is excited about this, its 52nd annual event in Library Park in historic Old Town Monrovia.
Prizes, yes there will be prizes that are funded by your nominal entry fee and by generous sponsors in the area.
All Prize winners will also receive an 8X10 photograph of their work by Brian Huffman Photography
If you’d like to join please write me direct [email protected] and I’ll send you an application with the full details. Unlike some other festivals we like to think of ours as the friendlier, more fun Chalk Art Festival in the SGV. Yes, there are some requirements. Entry fee of $25 but that also makes you a member of MAFA. Subject matter is wide open, but because the Celebrate the Arts is a community family oriented venture so you can’t include pornographic or erotic themes and content. You need to apply early as space is limited and spaces are assigned on a first come, first served basis. As Celebrate the Arts is MAFA’s big fund raiser for the year we ask that you create a small piece of art on a 12″X12″ canvas to be included in our silent auction.
Disclosure…I’m a Board Member and Jury Chairman for the Monrovia Association of Fine Arts. I donate way too much time according to my wife as I firmly believe in their mission statement: “Enhance the lives of those within our community through interaction with the arts. Increase the opportunities of our children through art education.”. And do “like” us on Facebook.
Edit 1:57 PM our First Prize sponsor has been signed on and announced.
Pasadena is getting their own with the grand opening is set for Thursday May 1st.. And its a twist with this opening…all of the proceeds from pizza sales will go to benefit the Pasadena Humane Society & SPCA. And even better…its a pay-what-you-want for your pie so if you really feel generous about supporting the Pasadena Humane Society & SPCA you can pay more than the $8 suggested donation. They open at 11AM and will remain open until 11PM.
To further celebrate their opening in Pasadena, they are giving away 5 winners “Free Pizza for a Year”. Contest HERE.
Continuing the party into the weekend Sunday May 5 from 5-10PM is “Social Media Fan Appreciation Night”. Show on your phone, or a print out you “liked” or “followed” them on facebook, twitter or instagram and you get a free pizza. Yes…free.
We all run around with our phones snapping pics and sharing the world as we see it. Until now you either tossed onto social media like twitter or photo sharing sites like flickr and shared it with a few friends and that was it. West Hollywood based F.8. Interactive just changed what you do with your pics via Snapcious.
Snapcious takes your image sharing to the next degree. It gives you missions to fulfill with your trusty phone cam and post onto the game. From there other Snapcious review and rate your pics and the winners in many categories are announced each day. Each time you post a pic you get points. You also collect points for suggesting missions, rating images and making comments on what you see.
The game is the brainchild of long time blogging.la contributor Mack Reed and a few others at F.8 Interactive. Since its launch on iTunes a few weeks back it has picked up followers across the globe. You can download it from iTunes HERE and join the fun. Complete guide on points and how to play HERE. Best of all…its a FREE app.
Unlike some of the other social media pic sharing places like, um say Instagram, you own the pics forever and don’t sign away any rights in the TOS. Thats a biggy for me as you never know which images I will wind up using for sale that I want to keep control of.
Winners havebeen selected and notified via email. Thank you for your comments!
It’s hard to remember when I was last affected by a film as much as I have been by Wim Wenders’ Academy Award nominated 3D documentary Pina. I’ve seen it in the theater three times and love it more each time.
PINA is a feature-length dance film in 3D with the ensemble of the Tanztheater Wuppertal Pina Bausch, featuring the unique and inspiring art of the great German choreographer, who died in the summer of 2009.
PINA is a film for Pina Bausch by Wim Wenders.
He takes the audience on a sensual, visually stunning journey of discovery into a new dimension: straight onto the stage with the legendary Tanztheater Wuppertal Pina Bausch ensemble, he follows the dancers out of the theatre into the city and the surrounding areas of Wuppertal – the place, which for 35 years was the home and centre for Pina Bausch’s creativity.
Pina is going to being showing at the fabulous Downtown Independent starting Friday, March 2nd through Thursday, March 8th. Blogging LA has FIVE (5) PAIRS OF TICKETS TO GIVE AWAY TO THE SCREENING OF YOUR CHOICE AT THE DOWNTOWN INDEPENDENT.
Leave a comment by 12pm on Thursday, March 1st stating why you would like to see Pina. Five winners will be selected and notified by email.
Remember the two gentlemen who spoke “Jive?” Remember the subtitles at the bottom that translated what they were saying? Remember whenever one of them would say a certain word, the subtitle always translated it as “Golly?”
It’s in this spirit I would like to remind you, one and all, that The Wu-Tang Clan Ain’t Nothin’ to Trifle With!
(And if you haven’t seen Airplane, get your golly together and watch the trifling thing.)
In Any Case, I’m giving away Tickets to see The Wu on Saturday, Jan 21st! Wanna Go?
Email your Full Legal Name as it appears on your Legal Driver’s Licence or State ID card to [email protected]
Winners will be notified and will show said ID at the Will Call booth the night of the show to claim tickets. Protect your neck.

Try describing Beats Antique to someone that hasn’t experienced them and you end up talking about a kaleidoscope of styles.
It’s Electronica, No! it’s Middle Eastern, wait, it’s Down-tempo, maybe Afro-Beat? There’s an amazing bellydancer and her team, there’s sometimes a crazy Marching Band, occasionally a wild explosion of live puppet dancers, jazz. What the hell is it?
Divine. Going to a Beats Antique concert is always an experience, kind of psychedelic, kinda dreamy…always fun.
If you want to get in on the action for FREE just give us your description of what describes their vibe onstage. Best four descriptions get free tickets for this Friday nights show on the 30th at the Club Nokia.
Do it now, cuz we have to make a decision and give these tickets away! Make sure when you sign in you leave us your email so we can contact you if you win (it’s not published!)
If you don’t win, you can buy tickets here.
Along with Beats Antique, Emancipator, Random Rab and Lynx are hitting the stage.
Beats Antique was formed by two rad musicians Tommy “Sidecar” Cappeland, David Satori and a hip-hop belly dancer named Zoe Jakes. Their performances defy description! But give it your best shot!
The good folks at the L.A. Auto Show hooked me up with a Family 4 pack of tickets…that’s admission for 4 to this years show that will run November 18-27 at the Convention Center. You’ll need to read the whole post in order to get to the details on what to do to win.
I’m really jazzed that the L.A. Auto Show has invited me back for Press Days this year which is this Wednesday and Thursday. There is so much going on with some 50 premieres set for those days. Add in the Green Car of the Year award and the press days driving of the green cars there is much to do and tell about. Continue reading Win Family 4 pack of Tickets to L.A. Auto Show→
The folks over at 8 Asians is running the contest. Pretty simple rules you ask a question of John Cho and Kal Penn, they’ll read them, answer them and pick a winner. All the details HERE at the 8 Asians post. Its very important you ask the questions on their post as they won’t be looking here. Seriously, ask the actors not the character (like my knuckle-headed kids insisted on).
While you are at it take a look at the 8 Asians blog. They look at numerous issues, serious and humorous that affect the Asian American community. The humorous ones are the most fun, but its all good.
Just a simple plug and we are cross posting with permission. As well as using their publicity photo with permission.

I’ve got a secret that I can’t explain…actually, it’s not a secret now. We’re giving away TWO PAIRS of tickets to see OMD (Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark) this coming Friday, October 7th at Club Nokia. I was excited when I learned earlier this year that OMD was still performing. I admittedly hadn’t thought of them in a good while, but I do have fond memories of their music I had some nice emo times listening to them and pining for a certain young man, before emo was even a thing.
If you are also nostalgic for some great 80s synth-pop and would like to see OMD live, leave a comment below (be sure to sign in with a legit email address) no later than Noon on Tuesday, 10/4.
I’ll try to avoid the cliche’s any further. I am totally amped I to give away not one, but TWO pairs of Tickets to see Blondie at the Nokia on 10/5. Yup, that punk/new wave songstress that I have admired since college is coming to town. Her current tour promises a great mix of the early works as well as some of the newer stuff that drifts into experimental jazz. I think I have every album she ever made and could ramble on about her, but if you want more on her discography and bio check out her official page HERE.
What to do to win? Sign on in the comments with a legit email addy and tell me why you want to see Blondie. I’ll pick the winners at random Friday morning and make the announcement by noon.
For those of you who don’t win you can always go to Nokia directly HERE and order your tix.
