Looking for a break from the rhetoric and vitriol of the election season? If so be in Old Pasadena Sunday 10/23 3PMish for the silliness that is the Running of the Clowns. Yes, the parody of the running of the bulls with funny clowns is taking place next Sunday in Old Town Pasadena. After the fun and excitement in the alleys and byways of Old Pasadena the crew will meet up for debriefing at Lucky Baldwins.
Want to be a runner or a clown? Rules are simple Dress in white with a big bold Red sash as a runner. Be a funny lovable clown and you can join in the fun that way. Full dossier can be found on GuerilLA Facebook page.
Parking in Old Town is kind of a bummer and expensive when you find it so consider using the Metro Gold Line and taking it to Memorial Station…the official location of the start of the Running of the Clowns.
Video by me from the first running of the clowns in 2014.
Mark your calendars for something a little bit different. Galpin Auto in the Valley is hosting a car show. Not just any car show, but one dedicated to rare custom automobiles of all makes. There will be hundreds of beautiful, one-of-a-kind, unique show cars and exciting new activities for the whole family to see and enjoy!
The show will take place Sunday September 18 from 10AM-2PM at Galpin Auto. Their address is 15505 Roscoe Blvd, Van Nuys 91343. This show is FREE to the public. More information here at the FB Page.
It was quite the car show yesterday. Very heavy with the customs and one that stood out so far above the others I called it my personal favorite and named it “best of show” The work this young man out into an old Mercury chopping, channeling, lowering and flaming was simply amazing.
Its debatable which is the bigger deal in Old Town Monrovia this Saturday. The Umpteenth Annual Street Rods Forever Car Show or Zipcode Day Celebrations…a local holiday celebrating the zip code and date coinciding 9/10/16 in the 91016. My personal favorite is the Street Rods Forever car show as, well, its all about the cars.
Street Rods Forever will occupy Myrtle Avenue from the 300 South Block down to the 800 South Block in the heart of Old Town Monrovia from 9AM-2PM.

Today was the annual Concorso Ferrari…a concours quality car show featuring the drop dead gorgeous Ferrari line of cars. From the early Series 250 to the uber rare Enzo and La Ferrari the line was well represented. There were 76 cars presented for judging…those cars were identified with yellow window placards and were up significantly in number from last year. Also regular pristine drivers totalled nearly 150 cars. Add in the exotics from lessors, restorers and new car sales there were well over 200 Ferraris on display in Pasadena’s Old Town April 24, 2016.
This past weekend I woke early and made tracks for the biggest Single Manufacturer car show in So Cal. Yup, not much gets me up early on sleep in day quite like a good car show. This show is not one to disappoint. From survivors to customs to the ridiculous you’ll find a good cross section of Ford, Lincoln, Mercury and Edsels to delight and amaze. Or just have a nice stroll down memory lane remembering Grandpa’s old Ford.
The run away favorite for me was the incredile Thunderbird Low Rider that claimed title of Best of Show for me. Through much effort mechanically and with shocking paint treatment turned this old classic into an amazing custom that looks more like some sort of science fiction transport than what the original did.
The video is from last years Concorso Ferrari and a good teaser on what you’ll get to see at this years show set for Sunday April 24. 10AM-3PM. There will be classic rare Ferraris to the newer yet uber rare La Ferraris at this special showing of 140 Ferraris on Colorado Boulevard between Raymond and Pasadena Avenues in Old Town Pasadena.
One of the the BIGGEST, and I mean BIG, so big traffic backs up for miles type event here in the SGV is the Jet Propulsion Laboratory’s open house. Last year it was such a cluster of traffic and hurt feelings our friends at JPL are introducing a ticket system to stem the tide and bring some order to their open house.
The Open House set for June 4 and 5 will require a ticket. Deets here on their FB Page. Short of it is no ticky no entry. Order your tickets HERE beginning Monday 4/25. Based on the limited amount of tickets and popularity of this event across the metro area I’d suggest you be up at dawn and start trying to order for this don’t miss event to see how JPL explores our solar system.
Two Thousand plus Ford, Edsel, Mercury, Lincoln and assorted oddball European Ford products will grace the huge lot to the east of Knott’s Berry Farm Sunday April 17. Admission is FREE!
This is probably one of my most favorite single vendor shows here in the LA Metro Area. You’ll see everything from the earliest survivor Model T’s to the completely restored to the custom chop top low riders. You name it you’ll see it.
Deets: 10-6, Sunday April 7, Beach and La Palma Blvd, Buena Park CA MAP HERE.
Big news, and something that will liven up Old Town Monrovia with new faces is the for a buck ride on a shuttle from the Gold Line Station in Station Square to Library Park in the heart of Old Town Monrovia. From there its an easy walk to the Krikorian Theatre, and a boat load of mid to high end restaurants and bars in Old Town. The shuttle will run Fridays and Saturdays during prime, 5PM-10PM, time evening fun in Old Town. The Shuttle will be clearly marked and easy to identify.
The shuttle will start at the Round about by the station platforms and Parking garage in Monrovia’s Station Square and end at Library Park about 10 minutes later. The fare will be one thin buck and FREE if you have a TAP card. This sure beats walking, especially when summer hits and its 100+ in the evening still.
Also note, barring rain, Friday nights are “Family Festival” nights in Old Town Monrovia from 5PM-9PM. Family Fesitval is a Farmers market, flea market and stuff for kids like Pony Rides, petting zoo and bounce houses. Numerous restaurants have sidewalk dining set up, add in a host of food vendors and live music you have a real party going on.
In the future they hope to expand advertising for the community Dial a Ride program to include passengers at Station Square so those evenings you desperately need happy hour during the week you can still get into Old Town without a hike.
If you are a collector of vintage comic books, those going back 25-50 years this is the place to be this Sunday in the Valley. Oic your favorite super hero and or action figure comic character and find them in the stacks of goodies at this show.
There will be numerious vendors and exhibits as well as 8 comic book celebrities and/or Hollywood types gracing the show with their expertise in the minutiae of that business. Make not mistake about it, this is an art form and is celebrated at this convention.
They have a facebook page that the randomly update with information on the happenings that will take place Sunday at the convention. With nearly 2.5K followera this is shaping up to be a do not miss.

Last fall the Foothill Extension signed over the tracks to Metro and testing began. Testing is nearly over and the grand opening is set for this saturday. Duarte station is the site of the official ribbon cutting and opening at the midway point between Pasadena and the end at Azusa. With the ribbon cutting trains start rolling at noon to the new stations in Arcadia, Monrovia, Duarte, Irwindale and finally Azusa.
Monrovia plans on making a day of it. Bands, food tents, craft tents in the area around the train depot known officially as “Station Square” Their ceremony is set to start at 11AM Saturday with ribbon cutting at 11:30 and first train rolling in at noon. To ensure the community can get to the fun down at Station Square they will be running a free shuttle from Old Town Monrovia down to the station activities.
Metro to celebrate the day has made the Gold Line a free ride from noon to midnight on Saturday. This could be your chance to visit the SGV and cities along the route to see what makes them different and special. Just remember if traveling here from other lines you will need to have your TAP card filled and loaded as those lines will not be free. Failing to tap your TAP can be a big fine.
Its that time of year for me. Sorting receipts, wondering what’s deductible or not and what new tax laws affect my art generated income. If you’re an artist looking for guidance to make sure you get all your deductions and not sure what changes this year took place that could affect you, have I got a seminar for us.
