After dancing around and debating about going or not I broke down and went this weekend. Why I was putting it off I don’t know. It was actually a lot of fun, something one needs to do at least once in their life. There is a lot of period confusion among the fair goers, its not all pure Medieval Renaissance times with some fun in the form of trolls, ogres and fairies tossed in for good measure. But its all in good fun.

You get a good smattering of crafts, free wine tasting courtesy San Antonio winery, beer huts, music, free shows…minstrel, comedy/variety, magic and wenches all tossed in with some pretty good food too.

This isn’t a free event. Tickets at the door are $25 head, you can purchase slightly discounted tickets at select Walgreen stores enumerated HERE. Parking at the Santa Fe dam will also set you back $10 bones for a dirt lot. Map to location here near the junction of the 210/605 Freeways. Better hurry as next weekend is the last weekend it will run this year.

Little effort required on your part. Get a bag and fill it with canned goods. Leave it by your mailbox and your letter carrier will pick up and deliver it to your local food bank. One of my pleasures of living in the relatively dry SoCal climate is our thriving classic car culture. Part of that culture will be on display this Saturday, as downtown Culver City hosts its “Crusing Back to the 50s“ car show right out on Culver and Washington Blvds. from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. I was there four years ago, and it was loads of fun.

In addition to a selection of over 400 classic cars, expect to see some of the world’s most famous tv show custom cars and their creator, George Barris (Batmobile, Munster Koach, etc.). There will be food, music, and car-related merchandise on hand as well. Oh, and did I mention that admission to the show is free?

I’m a sucker for a fuller-than-usual moon and couldn’t wait for tonight’s so-called Super Moon to rise high enough to be visible from ground-level in my backyard. So, shortly after it rose tonight, I scrambled up to the tippy-top of my steeply pitched roof in Silver Lake and at 8:54 p.m., put my point-and-shoot camera up to the eyepiece of tripod-mounted 60x spotting scope and shot this frame (click it to biggify):

Hero Complex Film Festival May 18-21

Superheroes, nasty villains, and zombies will visit us as the Hero Complex Film Festival returns to Los Angeles on May 18-21, at the Regal Cinemas at L.A. Live. Cinema classics will be screened with stars and creators of the movies, such as RoboCop with an appearance by Peter Weller, Shaun of the Dead featuring director Edgar Wright, and A Clockwork Orange with Malcolm McDowell. On Monday, pioneer comic book creator Stan Lee (Spider-Man, X-Men, Fantastic Four, etc.) will be there for a not yet announced screening. Although the $105 festival pass is listed as sold out, individual screening passes can be had for $20, which isn’t much more than a movie ticket on a weekend night nowadays.

Sunday I ventured out to the Fabulous Fords Forever car show. Among the cars there was this recently wrecked Mustang in a “cast” for anyone to sign. First time I’ve ever seen that at a car show or on the streets. Pretty clever. Hope it gets it fixed soon without much hassle. Click to embiggen the image.

I’m not a fan of malls, but I am a sucker for a good fine art event. At least Paseo Colorado is a semi-open mall. Paseo Spring Fest promises to be among the better ones as it is a juried event, meaning the artists have to be reviewed by a jury panel to ensure they are accomplished at what they do.

During your time at the art show if you need a break and feel the need for a little libations do stop in at the Bodega Wine Bar.

Parking is fairly good at the Paseo. It is about 6 blocks, an easy walk from the Gold Line Memorial Park Station which is a pretty good option if you are mass transit enabled.

Tenth Annual Pasadena Earth and Arts Festival Saturday 4/14/12

You’d think I live in Pasadena given how often I post about the place, I don’t, but they always have something of interest going on. This Saturday its the 10th Annual Pasadena Earth and Arts Festival to be held in and around the Armory Center for the Arts across from Memorial Park. Here’s the run down of things that will be at this FREE festival:

huge eco-market place with exhibitors private and public helping you to live green
The Green Truck and Coolhaus food trucks for sustainable noshing
First ever sustainable beer garden with a biodegradable “little red cup” featuring the beer from Craftsman Brewing Company and Eagle Rock Brewery
Fallen Fruit will be there with its jam making wisdom. Feel free to bring in your found fruit from public spaces or your own back yard.

For gawds sake take public transpo to the Gold Line and exit Memorial Park Station…you’ll be right at the park and only a very short walk to the Armory Center. Show your metro pass or ticket at the Transportation Booth and they will have a gift for you…well a gift as long as the supply lasts. Beats the difficulty in finding parking in the area which can be expensive when you do find a space and don’t forget that PPD does patrol hard for scofflaws.

626 Night Market coming to Pasadena Saturday 4/14

It isn’t often I get jazzed about a press release’s contents but this event sounds too cool to pass up. A tradition in some Asian countries is a night market wherein streets become giant markets for the night. That is is exactly what is happening this Saturday night in Pasadena on Oakland Avenue between Union and Colorado. The event promises to be filled with music, food and merchandise all with an Asian flare to it. Admission is FREE!

Parking is tough (and expensive and extensively patrolled for scofflaws) in that area. I strongly suggest that if you are mass transit enabled do so and get yourself onto the Gold Line and take it to the Memorial Station and walk the couple of blocks it takes to get there.

ASIAN NIGHT MARKET COMING TO PASADENA

The San Gabriel Valley is home to a large and diverse Asian population, which boasts many excellent ethnic restaurants and businesses that are largely unknown to those outside the area. But they will finally get the exposure they deserve when Pasadena hosts Southern California’s only Asian Night Market on Saturday, April 14, from 5 to 11:30 p.m. on Oakland Ave. between Colorado Blvd. and Union St. Admission is free.

Dubbed the “626 Night Market,” in reference to the area code of the San Gabriel Valley, the event will feature an authentic Asian street fair experience, which is a fixture of Asian communities. The 626 Night Market aims to provide greater exposure for these hidden businesses and fun for people of all ages by bringing a staple of Asian culture and commerce to Pasadena.

“With a lively downtown that includes the Pacific Asia Museum and Pasadena Museum of California Art, Pasadena is the perfect location for the 626 Night Market,” said Economic Development Director Eric Duyshart. “Businesses will get great exposure here. That’s good for Pasadena and the greater San Gabriel Valley region.”

The 626 Night Market will feature more than 70 local restaurants and businesses. Mouth-watering food selections range from Hong Kong Egg Waffles and Taiwanese Crepes to Chinese Teas and Dragon Whiskers Candy, not to mention stinky tofu.

Retail vendors will sell Asian-inspired clothes and shoes, unique cell phone and tablet accessories, toys, cosmetics, jewelry and more. Many vendors are independent start-ups and first-time entrepreneurs pursuing their small-business dream, which bolsters the local economy.

Parking will be available in public lots near the event on Union St. and Oakland and Madison avenues. Visitors are also encouraged to go green and take public transit, including the Metro Gold Line to nearby Memorial Station.
