Ticket Giveaway: Midlake @ the Henry Fonda, Tuesday 9/25

3:02 pm in Uncategorized by Jay Bushman

Midlake-1

We’ve got 3, that’s right, 3 pairs of tickets to give away for Midlake’s Tuesday night show at the Henry Fonda Theater.

The tickets will go to the first three commenters who can give me a good recipe for Kingfish Pies. All decisions about what entails a “good recipe” are mine and are final. So get in the kitchen or the particle acceleration room and get creative.

It’s Gone!

2:46 pm in Uncategorized by Jay Bushman

I drove down the 101 this afternoon, and there was a palpable sense of loss. Of something missing.

Yes, The House is finally gone.

Did anybody see it’s removal? Or did it just slink away in the dead of night.

Some say, when the time is right, the house shall return to us.

Update: Yup, it’s still there

Curbed LA

Curbed LA provides us with a wonderful photo of that house still sitting on the side of the 101. I bet they could rent it out – prime Hollywood location with easy freeway access.

If you were thinking of taking the 101 North through Hollywood today…

12:45 pm in Driving by Jay Bushman

…just forget about it. Seems a house-hauling vehicle got stuck under a bridge. Those pesky height signs actually DO mean something. Now there’s a house sitting on the side of the road, and two of the Northbound lanes are shut down. Traffic is backed up to at least downtown.

No confirmation on the reported presence of a Wicked Witch underneath the house, although there are rumors of a young girl fleeing the scene in shiny red shoes.

Creative Geography, Part 731

6:00 pm in Downtown, LA by Jay Bushman

Well, I finally got to see Live Free or Die Hard, which was patently silly, but a lot better than I thought it would be. And dig the crackerjack cinematography by Simon Duggan! Viva la practical effects.

But when it came to some of the car chases through “Washington D.C.”, something just didn’t look right….

Underworld at the Hollywood Bowl

3:13 pm in LA, Media, Music by Jay Bushman

What? Pizza with no eggs?

Continuing an unintentional series in which I see my favorite bands live for the first time.

Karl Hyde dances like a spaz, and it’s wonderful. He evokes an alternate universe where Ian Curtis did not do himself in, overcame his epilepsy and depression through liberal applications of E and stem cells from Thom Yorke, and learned how to smile.

Rick Smith looks to be fully recovered from being injured in a Greek terrorist anarchist riot.

Juanita/Kiteless is one of the most beautiful songs I’ve ever heard. Unfortunately, they didn’t play Dirty Epic. But if they had, I might have dissolved into a puddle of goo.

It’s a lovely venue, but I wish I’d seen them in an enclosed space. I want to be enveloped in their music, to have it bouncing from the walls behind and above me, to be immersed.

“Moaner” was apparently on the set-list, but they did not play it. It wasn’t because of the curfew, since the show ended by about 10:30. Too bad, since it would be the only other song besides “Born Slippy” that my companion would have recognized, what with 30 seconds of it being in the Batgirl motorcycle chase in Batman & Robin.

“Rez” is going back in right now as my ringtone.

Does the Bowl do pointless pizza tie-ins for every act?

Here are some videos and photos I found through an Underworld forum.

October can’t come soon enough.

Highlights:

Karl Hyde’s unstoppable flailing

“Juanita”

“Beautiful Burnout”

Space Invaders and Pong on the video screen

Karl dedicating show closer “Jumbo” to a guy in “Lew-weezy-ana”

Karl repeatedly crying out “fan-TAS-tic!” all night long.

Lowlights:

Seriously, what’s up with that pizza?

TSA Freakout At LAX

9:54 pm in LA by Jay Bushman

B.LA buddy and BoingBoing-atrix Xeni Jardin got caught in a TSA psychofreakout at LAX today:

I walked from the arrival gate towards baggage claim, and when I was about halfway there, all of a sudden about a dozen or more TSA personnel and private security staff appeared, shouting STOP WHERE YOU ARE. FREEZE. DO NOT MOVE. Not just at me, but all of the travelers who happened to be wandering through the hallway at that moment.

Some of the TSA guards then backed up against walls in the hallway, and sort of barked at anyone who tried to move a few feet away from their “spot,” like towards chairs to sit down or whatever.

Wilco Tango Foxtrot, people? Code Chartreuse? No explanation? Sounds like we’re being turned into the United States of Cattle.

I flew out of Burbank earlier this week, and they would not let me take by still-sealed Starbucks Yogurt Parfait through security.

Then again, maybe I’m overreacting. Perhaps TSA was trying to save Xeni from a family-values Republican Senator in the bathroom.

Thoughts from last night’s Public Enemy Show at House of Blues

3:57 pm in Uncategorized by Jay Bushman

Public Enemy

Chuck D has always been one of my personal heroes. Hearing “Bring the Noise” for the first time in 1987 was one of those life-changing musical moments. I stood on a street corner across from the White House during the Gulf War protests in 1991, with a crowd of a hundred, singing “Don’t Believe the Hype.” I still believe that “Fight the Power” should have been the first hip-hop song to win an Oscar for Best Song.

But last night was the first time I’d ever had the opportunity to see them live. They did not disappoint. Some random observations after the jump.

Downtown Meet-Your-Neighbor and Town-Hall Meeting Tonight

11:31 am in Announcements, Downtown, Events, LA by Jay Bushman

Bert Green informs us that there’s a town-hall-type meeting tonight at the Farmer’s & Merchant’s Bank building at 4th and Main:

The meeting will run from 6:30 to 8:30 and will consist of a “meet your neighbors” event for the first 1/2 hour or so, followed by a series of short presentations on various projects and programs being proposed and built in the near future in Downtown Los Angeles. Some of the presentations will discuss new real estate developments, others beautification and cultural issues. It should be pretty informative.

I’d love to go check it out, but I’ll be at the Public Enemy show at HOB tonight. If any of you make it down, please comment on how it went.

The Arclight Ultimatum

10:40 pm in Uncategorized by Jay Bushman

http://www.jaunted.com/files/admin/arclight_theater.jpg

In trying to purchase tickets for a weekend screening of the Bourne Ultimatum, we found that the Arclight’s computer ticketing system to be totally fubared. The credit card was charged twice, but no actual tickets were issued. Upon going down to the theater for a hearty WTF, we learned that we were far from the only ones – the long line was filled with folks in similar situations. Some of them showed off their confirmation emails, only to learn that they didn’t have tickets.

So if you’re heading down Arclight way this weekend, double check that your tickets are real. Think I’ll get there earlier than usual, in anticipation of a press of confusion and consternation.

LAX Fingerprints Stopover Passengers Who Are Not Entering The U.S.

12:26 pm in Uncategorized by Jay Bushman

“You bloody Yanks seem to think terrorism is something new and only ever happens to Americans….We’ve had the IRA and the French have the Algerians and the Spanish have ETA. Now you know what the rest of Europe’s been living with for the last few hundred years. Why don’t you lot just grow up?”

*Sigh*

I can’t remember the last time I had a flight that didn’t suck in some way, either from ridiculous security theatre, cramped and overcrowded planes, or asshole customer service. At least I haven’t had to deal with any poop on my plane.

And a 40% chance of the owls not being what they seem.

I’ve heard for a while that David Lynch will sometimes pop onto Indie 103.1 with a daily weather report. Having left terrestrial radio behind for SiriXMus, I’ve never heard it. But what luck, he’s been providing this service for several years on his own website:

The David Lynch Daily Weather Report

I wish we could embed this on the front page.

Simple. First two commenters to post a movie quote with “Bird” and “Bee” replacing words in the quote win the tickets. For example:

Star Wars: “Hokey religions and ancient weapons are no match for a good bird and bee at your side.”

Hackers: “A bird and a bee? Whoa, plot thickens.”

Make sure you include a working email address in your comment.

Spotted this sign during a recent stroll through Librarytown. Could it be the next blow in our own Will Campbell’s War On Signage. Even if it isn’t, I think we should say it is.

Laser Engraving Your iPhone

5:16 pm in Uncategorized by Jay Bushman

200707161715

Gizmodo gives the deets on a Santa Monica company, Device Nine Six, that will laser engrave your iPhone for you, if you’re not faint of heart (not me, Dr. Jones).

They include a demonstration video showing one lucky iPhone getting the laser treatment. Hey, what is that logo they’re putting on there anyway? Could it be…?
