I really really really hope they keep that wood paneling in there!

Fake Seal on Door
Now that seal on the door is fake, anybody know what movie it was from?

LA Live Groundbreaking Ceremony Photo Essay

5:04 pm in Downtown, Events, LA by Dave Bullock / eecue

Today I attended the LA Live Groundbreaking Ceremony in Downtown Los Angeles. There was a wide array of notable Los Angeles and California dignitaries in attendance. The highlight of the event for me was twofold, one that the Governor (who was introduced as The Terminator, Arnold Schwarzenegger) is going to be my new Downtown LA neighbor once LA Live is complete and secondly that Jan Perry made fun of Arnold’s shoes. She surmised that his wife did not dress him this morning:

Arnold Schwarzenegger's Alligator Skin Shoes

Here are some more photos from the ceremony:

A few more after the jump and a few more photos here on blogdowntown, flickr, eecue.com and the full gallery here.

This Sunday Eric Richardson, Ed Fuentes and I are hosting a picnic in Elysian Park. It is a “Downtown blogger” picnic, but don’t feel that you aren’t invited if you don’t live or blog in Downtown Los Angeles. We’re starting at 2pm and you can find more information about the event on blogdowntown. Jan Perry and various other notable figures are slated to make an appearance, where will you be?

Made of Honor : Lighting Up The Hood

10:18 pm in Downtown, Filmmaking/Filmmakers by Dave Bullock / eecue

I don’t know how much better a plot could be than this (via IMDB):

A guy in love with an engaged woman tries to win her over after she asks him to be her maid of honor.

Personally I can’t wait to buy it on DVD and/or see it 6 times in the theater. I am willing to bet that the folks who live in the Main Street facing apartments at the Pacific Electric Lofts are even more excited than I am:

Made of Honor Lighting the PE Building

Hope they don’t have to wake up too early tomorrow! You can see a few more photos on eecue.com or flickr.

Downtown Diversion

5:46 pm in Downtown by Dave Bullock / eecue

Debris is separated and processed

Today I took a tour of a really cool recycling plant in Downtown LA called Downtown Diversion [warning auto-play movie with sound]. They process and recycle 350 million pounds of construction and demolition waste per year. I wrote more about it here on eecue.com and of course took a bunch of photos of their plant, many in HDR and all Creative Commons licensed.

Yesterday was the May Downtown Art Ride, we didn’t have the largest turnout ever, but we had fun. Below is a photo from the Persee show we went to after the ride, and here is a link to more info and more photos from the ride.

LA Times Refuses to Hyperlink from Articles

9:06 am in Downtown, LA by Dave Bullock / eecue

It seems ludicrous to me that in this day and age of technology, a major media outlet like the LAT doesn’t know how, or simply refuses, to link to websites they mention in their articles. I am guessing this has something to do with their outdated cumbersome publishing platform, because they do link on their various blogs. The reason I am posting this, is because Eric Richardson has been covering the whole APT debacle for the last 6 months on Blogdowntown, and although he gets two lines of coverage in the article LAT finally wrote about the APTs, they didn’t hyperlink to his article or website. Seriously though, what are you guys thinking?

Great American Boycott 2007 Coverage Roundup

3:53 pm in Downtown, Events by Dave Bullock / eecue

Ok, no snarky baseless attacks against fellow bloggers in this roundup, here is what the word is on the interwebs:

  • LA Times woke up and smelled the dynamically updateable web coffee and launched a real time blog on their website, covering all kinds of interesting details about the march… great job guys, keep it up and you may stay in business!
  • I ran in to Ed Fuentes of View From A Loft, who was taking photos of marchers. He chided me for drinking too much at Coachella and missing the headliners, yes it’s true, I suck.
  • Eric Richardson of Blogdowntown has several posts about march related issues, but so far nothing about the actual march. When I talked to him earlier he said he was planning on covering issues relating to businesses and residents and how they have been affected by the march
  • Xeni over at Boinboing posted one of my photos and links to the posts here on blogging.kla
  • LA Times’ Opinion LA Blog has a roundup with some more links to coverage including my photos:
Dave Bullock, also known as eecue, has photos on blogging.la and on his personal site, including some nice perspectives of a mass of marchers on Broadway.

  • Ryan Knoll over at LAVoice didn’t see any marchers on his walk from Pershing Square to Metro Center early in the morning, and mentions that he wasn’t actually on the route, but the turnout still seemed light. He was spot on, the march brought out roughly 10% what it pulled last year.
  • Here at blogging.la, I covered the march with my cameras and posted a few photos on here as well as on eecue and flickr. Sean Bonner posted a dire warning to stay the heck out of Downtown, but I think he was just trying to hoard all the danger falafel to himself.
  • Cindy Mosqueda expresses her survivor guilt for not joining in and boycotting work and school today.

So maybe it was a little bit snarky, but hey, I tried.

Great American Boycott Live Photo Blogging : Part 2

12:33 pm in Downtown, Events, Politics by Dave Bullock / eecue

There are currently between 100,000 and 250,000 protesters walking down Broadway. The turnout is nowhere near as large as the first huge march last year, but it is still quite large. The protesters filled Broadway from Olympic to City Hall, and I couldn’t see the end of the line when I left a few minutes ago. Once again there are thousands and thousands of American flags waving and people cheering and chanting everywhere you look. I am sorting through my photos and will be uploading shortly to this post. Stand By…

Protesters on Broadway

Parents and Children

More photos and words on eecue and flickr.

Update The LAT says that tens of thousands of people turned out for the march.

Pre-Protest

It’s that time of year again, time for a large protest down Broadway in Downtown Los Angeles. I walked down to the gathering point for the march on Olympic and Broadway around 8am this morning. There were only a few hundred people gathered there, but the march doesn’t start until 10. The placards and handbills are ready! Updates coming soon on here, flickr and eecue.com.

Coachella 2007 Roundup

4:18 pm in Events, Music by Dave Bullock / eecue

I just got back from Coachella a few hours ago. I had a great time, and got a few photos of the event. I think I’ve been to every Coachella except the first one, and for the last 3 years I have programmed a little application called the Cocachooser. Doing this programming gets me fairly unrestricted access to the event.

The last couple of years I stayed in a friend’s RV, before that I camped a few years, and before that I did the hotel thing. This year I bit the bullet and rented my own RV, which was very convenient as it allowed me to leave everything in one place and just carry with me what I would need (cameras). It also provided a place for me to drink, and the combination of whisky and the hot sun resulted in me not seeing any of the headliners. Oh well, I still had a great time.

Xeni covered Coachella in a three part series on BoingBoing and used a bunch of my photos. Don Garza thinks that the MSM are covering Coachella because of me, and I appreciate that thought, but I didn’t have anything to do with it.

LAist posted almost nothing in comparison to the onslaught of pre-Coachella posts they put up, although Tony Pierce did take the time to whine about expensive festival food, lines, and distant parking in his Coachella Breakup post... did he really sell his press tickets and then brag about it online?

Update: Oops… taking the Greyhound to, or more specifically home from, Coachella may have been a bad idea as dozens of stranded concertgoers have found out the hard way.

Update 2: Tony pierce has commented that he didn’t have press tickets, so he sold the tickets he bought, which is no big deal. Sorry for the baseless accusation, Tony.

Coachella Live Photo Blogging : Sunday Part 3

8:52 pm in Events, Music by Dave Bullock / eecue

Willie Nelson:

Willie Nelson

Xeni has more excellent Coachella coverage over on BoingBoing, and I’m not just saying that because she used a bunch of my photos. When I shot that photo of the robot with his guts hanging out, I had a few drinks in me and asked if he was autonomous. The operators told me he was the singularity. A few minutes later I actually listened to the voice coming out, and it was a guy 10 feet away on a walkie-talkie. =]
