L. A. artist questioned over tweet about obama

The artist SABO was detained and questioned by the Secret Service over a tweet.  SABO is the genius or demented mind depending on your POV behind the anti-Left posters floating around whenever hillary or the prez visit town.

The tweet itself wasn’t threatening.  He said he wished obama’s plane would crash.  Its free speech.  He certainly didn’t tweet he was going to take him out or similar that should have warranted eyebrows being raised.  Certainly in bushys day there were plenty of hostile thoughts tossed out by the left that weren’t so aggressively looked at.  What has become of us?  Is the division between left and right so extreme now that no one can say whats on their mind if its contrary to anothers political beliefs?

If you desire you can follow the rants and missives of SABO on twitter as @Unsavoryagents

Personally I’d love to meet the guy and find out more about him and his art.

L.A. Auto Show teasers and maybe a spoiler

The L.A. Auto Show has one thing unique to others.  Its the Design Challenge issued every year to the manufacturers.  It has a theme that they must respond to.  The Design Challenge is now in its 11th year.

This years Design Challenge is “Sensing the Future: How Will Cars Interact With Us In 2029?”  I’ve previewed Connected Cars that know what everyone is doing and can avoid accidents, even autonomous cars.  This challenge asks them to take it to the next level of human auto connectivity.  I can’t wait to see what all they have in store us as this years L.A. Auto Show.

Also, I have a bit of a spoiler.  Yesterday I was at a Ford event at their Los Angeles Regional HQ.  They confirmed that we will get the Premiere of the next generation Explorer at our show on November 19.  I’ve heard a few bits and pieces on other blogs that the next generation will use a lot of aluminum to reduce weight and better its performance and fuel economy.  They were tight lipped on specifics of the global reveal so I’ll just have to sit tight until then.

Also…the promo code AUTOTRADER2014 is still good for discounted tickets to the show 11/24-27.

Running of the Clowns…Old Town Pasadena will not be the same

http://youtu.be/GUSU2AN4i08
Ha…my sore feet and aching body tell me two things. I had way too much fun yesterday and I need to get in better shape if I’m gonna continue these sorts of escapades. What did I do you may ask?  Well, I was a runner at the first ever Running of the Clowns in Old Town Pasadena.  This video is the unofficial done by me version.  I have pic from it as well in a flickr album.

The official video is in need of a sound track.  Anyone know of a guitarist who could do a flamenco version of “Send in the Clowns”?  If so drop me a note and I’ll hook you up with the author of the official video.

Fall Artwalk at The Brewery

This weekend was the Fall Artwalk at the Brewery, one of the largest artist-in-residence complexes in the world.

If you haven’t heard of it, it’s in the industrial district northeast of downtown, in a large complex/campus comprised of an old Pabst brewery (hence the name), an old Edison power plant building, and many warehouses, all of which have been converted into artist lofts. Not those crappy “artist lofts” that were just built five years ago in mixed-use spaces with cardboard walls…these are vast concrete caverns of loft spaces, the kind I’d like–you know, the kind you can just hose out when it gets dusty. And it does, because it’s right by the railyards and the freeway.

During Artwalk the majority of Brewery residents open their doors to the public so people can see their art–and, hopefully, so they can make some sales. It’s tough for a lot of people who put a lot of blood, sweat and tears into their work all year long, in relative privacy, to have hundreds of people tromping through their door, assessing their life’s labor, often snapping photos without permission, then turning and walking out. But they do it because they know it’s important for the public to be exposed to art and the work that goes into it.

Thousands of people show up twice a year for Artwalk. Next week, I’ll profile a handful of artists I found and discuss their work; as for now, here’s kinda a look at the scene. You should go next time. Just go early–the parking lots fill up early! Especially the parking lot I snagged–UPS HQ, next door, opens their parking lot for Artwalkers. Check out whose spot I got.

La Carrera de los Payas* Sunday 10/26 at 2PM

* Running of the Clowns

I’m sorry the uploader doesn’t work for me…if it did I’d have a snazzy pic for you from the GLA Improv facebook page to share with you.  This is going to be a really fun event run through the alleys of Old Town Pasadena.

As a Runner you don’t have to be in that great of shape.  The furthest we sprint at any given time is a block.  You are to dress as the runners at the Running of the Bulls do…white pants, shirts and shoes with a red bandana.

If you choose a clown you have to be a happy friendly clown.  Not like “It” or “John Wayne Gacy”.  Costume materials are cheap and plentiful at the Dollar Store and 99Cent only stores.

The Mission is simple.  We all meet at the Sierra Madre Villa station of the Gold Line before 2PM.  Load your TAP card or buy RT fare totalling 3.50 for round trip.  At that point we will be briefed and grouped…runners in one car and clowns in another.  Catch a train to the Memorial Park Station by Holly Street and there the fun begins.  Full details on FB.

L.A. Auto Show starts in 5 weeks….I’ve got a promo code

L A Auto Show logo...
L A Auto Show logo…

Although I can’t help with a freebie…this promocode AUTOTRADER2014 good through 11/15 will get you discounted tickets good for admission 11/24-27.

I’ll try not to throw too many superlatives at the event, but this year I think they are going to be able to outdo what they’ve done the last several years.

On tap are 60 reveals for this show, 30 of which will be Global Reveals…or reveals for the first time anywhere for the global market.  Those are always pretty spectacular as the manufacturers really want to get our attention.

In addition to the Green Car of the Year, Green Truck of the Year and Green Fleet of the Year awards are going to be awarded at this years Los Angeles Auto Show.  Smell us…we’re really a big deal.

As always I’ll be there for press days and blogging what happens along with the oddities of the day that regular show goers don’t get to see.  I’m even going to a few of the Manufacturer private after parties which are always fun.  Last year Hyundai had Ziggy Marley as the entertainment and the wait staff was all dressed as zombies. Too.  Much.  Fun..

Ho-leeee crap. Hello, Los Angeles, my love.

Who’s got two thumbs (and her index fingers, with which she primarily types, like a spazzy T-Rex on a typewriter) and is back in LA?!

This girl.

Along these rhapsodic, elegiac and thrilled welcome-home lines I’m walking, here’s some songs to make you love your city again. Fall outta love? Don’t do what I do and leave.  Or do…it might be what you need to appreciate it.
Rilo Kiley, Let Me Back In: link: www.youtube.com/watch?v=aXZR0rwhXvs

“From the Eastern seaboard, the landlocked Midwest
The Keys, the Alps, the Black Hills and Budapest
With my heart in a sling, tail between my legs a-swinging
I’m sorry for leaving

But when the palm trees bow their heads
No matter how wrong I’ve been
L.A., you always let me back in

And you can bury me when my body breaks
In the earth that created me, in the Golden State
By my mama and her brother and their mama too…”

And then there’s this one, by the Delta Spirit, for the folks I left behind in the South.     ;)

I mean, this sorta already happened, and that fellow is now happily married, so….everybody come on out! Apparently I’m a great vector for changing your life.    :P

(Yes, this post is enormously personal. Kevin Roderick may have a field day with this one. Or he may not, which will make me feel like a loser. Whateves.)

“I want you to move to California for yourself,
I want you to find whatever your heart needs,
I want you to move to California for yourself, but not for me.

I want you to go out there and find somebody else,
I want him to treat you like I know he should,
I want you to find somebody new for yourself, if not for me.

all of the feelings that I know you never felt,
and all of the simple words you never said,
I want you to keep them like a secret to yourself, they’re not for me.

I want you to wander silent past my outstretched arms,
I want you to hide yourself from all I see,
and though my heart will fight until its dying breath, you’re not for me.”

Also…I love the video for this one.

So, yeah. I’m back. We did hot dogs, we did donuts. What do you think should be next?

Better than Gettypede…Running of the Clowns on 10/26

Sunday I met with the agents at GuerilLA Improv for what has the makings of an epic mission.  Its “La Carrera de los Payasos”, literally “Running of the Clowns” a parody of the annual Running of the Bulls in Spain. Cool.

The mission dossier isn’t out yet. They do have a basic FB Page up now. I did walk the route and can tell you it took us less than 30 minutes with a lot of stops to discuss what would happen at each juncture. It will be short stints of running…something even my feeble old knees can handle.

There is a dress code. If you are a clown…you dress in happy clown attire, not scarey attire like “it”. If you are a runner you wear all white like the bull runners with a red bandana, sash or kerchief.  Personally I’d love to see one of the runners in a white wedding dress being chased by the clowns down the street, but do I wish for too much?

If you want in message me so I can get you a full dossier when its ready. Join me for the first running of the clowns.

Pizza Rev opening in K-Town October 9 donates proceeds to LA Animal Shelter

Pizza Rev logo Pizza Rev is coming to K-town and its grand opening all proceeds go to helping the Los Angeles Animal Shelter, North Central Animal Shelter.  The LA Animal Shelter serves local homeless and abandoned pets.  The pizza deal is pretty sweet, you get a personal sized pizza and you pay what you want a the end for it (Suggested donation is $8).  I absolutely love a local business that branches out and gives back to the community with each new location.

Adding to the fun is Social Media Sunday on October 12.  All you have to do is “like” or “follow” them on facebook, instagram or twitter and show them your phone with the info and they will give you a free pizza!  Such a deal. (Sorry they aren’t on ello).

I’ve written about Pizza Rev a few times already.  Love the stuff…thin crispy Roman style pie you build yourself along an assembly line of friendly helpful Pizza Rev staff.  They even have gluten free and vegan options!  Do yourself a favor and pay them a visit if you are in the K-town area, you will be hard pressed to vind a better pizza for the money.  Anywhere.
