Menu Mining: Doomies Home Cookin’

Let me preface this with I’m not vegan, vegetarian or carnivore. I’m an omnivore and appreciate good food when I find it. I do “meatless monday” for health reasons and have found a lot of really good all veggie places. This one is near the top.

The atmosphere at Doomie’s is a bit divey, you can see the kitchen from the tables and its cluttered, but not dirty. The bathrooms I can’t be as nice about…I wanted to disinfect my shoes after going in there. But this isn’t about the potty but about the food.

I went with an old pal last night who is a practicing vegan and she RAVES about how good the food is…all vegan, except a little bit of real cheese available to those vegetarians who do that stuff.

We were greeted at the door with a smile. We were directed to sit where we wish and promptly handed menus and clued in on whats special for the night.

We had the jalapeno poppers as an appetizer. Addicting,. Even the dipping sauce was pretty marvy…without cream and cheese? Really, it was the perfect foil to the pop of the jalapenos which were stuffed with a vegan cheese, breaded and deep fried.

My friend had the “pulled pork:” with slaw and onion rings and loved it.

I’m a fan of the mushroom and went with the “Salisbury steak” and mushroom gravy. That was really a nice surprise, tasted like beef and really loaded with mushroom flavor. The mashed potatoes were a little dry but quite edible when dipped in the gravy.

For dessert we split a carrot cake wedge…big enough for 2. Chock full of nuts and light on the carrot and quite tasty. The icing I knew wasn’t cream cheese but it fooled you.

All told this was a pretty cheap dinner for 2….$52 with tip!

Parking can be an issue. We were surprised to see its Valet only evenings and they charge $6.50.  I suppose its worth it as the neighborhood is tight with little street parking to be found.
