No, I’m not talking a short term lease on an electric car, its on a gasser.  Suburban Simi Valley Ford is buying carbon offsets on any new car/truck you buy from them now through Earth Day (April 22, 2013).  They will purchase a 2 year carbon offset in your name from Carbonfund.org who in turn sends you a certificate for this purchase.

I talked with Mike Shell the leasing manager at Simi Valley Ford yesterday getting details on this program.  SVF is doing this because they want to leave a legacy and be a leader in helping to bring about an end to climate change.  So far since the Drive to Save the Environment Campaign started they have offset 1 Million, yes 1,000,000 pounds of carbon going into the air.  They hope that other dealers, including other brands will follow suit with this project in coming years.

Drive to Save the Environment is a partnership with Waste Management and Carbonfund.org. The carbon offset purchase gives Carbondfund.org the ability to do things like plant trees, aid in the deforestation of others and explore renewable energy options. Visit Carbondfund.org and you can even find a calculator to determine your carbon footprint and what you can do to minimize it.

The process for getting this offset is simple. Just make the best deal you can on a new car with them and buy it.  They will do all the paperwork in the background make this a stupid easy way to offset your carbon for the first 2 years of ownership.  Seriously, had I known about this program I would have made the drive from my Valley to theirs when I bought my new Focus.
